In this question, I have tried to explain the characteristics of complex adapted system and relate them with the healthcare world. I then explain the main underlying causes of complexity and how this complexity is hindering new technology from finding its way into the market. I believe we are being stuck in an infinite loop. Technologists say that technology is aimed to reduce complexity and smoothen workflow, yet technology itself brings complexity into the system. Researchers claim that modern research tends to reduce uncertainty in diagnosis and decision making, yet we see that more knowledge has also added to the complexity in terms of specializations, fragmentations and independent departments. I am not against technology and research, yet I believe that the problem of complexity cannot be solved through knowledge and technology alone. …show more content…
If we keep investing only on technology and research – which more donors prefer – the consequence would be that we may have good journal articles but little or no impact on healthcare complexity and patient safety. We need to invest on public awareness. Patients must influence the working of healthcare system by revealing their preferences. We should now aim for a patient-centered healthcare system. This is exactly where the conventional retail industry is now. It started off with the retail stores (1900 – 1980), to integrated retail systems like Wal-Mart (1980 – 2000) and finally consumer-directed retail like Amazon.com (2000 – now).
