Coming into college I knew I was going to meet new and different people compared to me. Dialectical tension occurs in every relationship. My roommate and I get along, but bringing friends to our room can be very embarrassing. The guy just does not know how keep his side tidy enough to at least be presentable. He has clothes scattered everywhere, food on his desk that would remind you of a garbage can, and his floor looks like somebody painted a picture on it, then messed up so the artist just ruined the picture by scribbling nonsense. To make everything better my roommate does not seem to care about if I am asleep or not. He sings like a broken record and plays music that is sometimes deafening to even the most open people. Closedness, deals with the need for open communication while also needing a degree of privacy (cited in Finding comfort in Dialectical Tension). I tend to be a very open person. I like to tell people about my day and I am always curious about how their day had gone as well. Me being able to be open with my roommate is sometimes difficult because of the novelty and predictability of our routines. If I wanted to have a conversation with my roommate it would have to be in the morning. During this time is when I am probably the most closed off socially. Dialectical tension occurs the most in the morning for the both of us. Honestly there are mornings where we do not say a single word to each other, not even a goodbye when I leave for class. It is not that I am mad at him and am trying to avoid him. I honestly just do not want to deal with anyone or truthfully do I care about what else is going around me till I wake up. My roommate I assume is the same way, yet I think he also is not a very social person, unless with a group of people he is comfortable around. I believe we manage our tensions between each other by simply talking later in the day. Sounds simple, but honestly that is all it takes for us to coexist together. He does his thing and I do
