Complexities And Imperfections In The Criminal Justice System

Decent Essays
There are many complexities and imperfections in the criminal justice system of the United States. As a concerned citizen, I believe we should bring our attention to this issue and take action to improve the system. In my opinion, I believe that today, the police force within suburban neighborhoods are not as involved with the neighborhood residents as they used to be. The Police Officers that are on city streets serve a dual role, they are the first line of defense for citizens as well as the first encounter that people as their liberties are limited and they enter the criminal justice system. If police officers are more properly vetted, to ensure that they will be a part of the solution and not a further level of the problem they would gain more trust from the people they are sworn to serve. The second vital thing that must happen is a more thorough training program for officers so that they are able to more readily identify if the people they encounter are mentally well or not. If they are able to more readily identify the mental stability of offenders this stands to mitigate further conflict between themselves and the person of…

While people claim there is a war on cops, the fact do not support this claim; not only are there already enhanced punishment for offenders who assault or kill police officers, but also police officers who use violence against unarmed and non-violent suspect rarely face criminal punishments for their actions. The system is stacked up against the community and it is no justice for any of the crimes that the police officers commit. The police have the law on their side and they can just take someone life away and they get award for murdering someone. The community does not trust the police because police officers target them even when they are not doing anything wrong. Lastly, they should not be above the law the community needs to have faith in the people who are supposed to be there to protect…

Drug addiction is the root of crime in the United States, in a 1997 report 80% of State inmates reported past drug use reported by Chris Mumola (1999). If the criminal justice system could reduce the number of people abusing drugs, it would reduce not only drug related crimes, but would reduce the amount of all crimes. A reduction in crime would result in a safer and more productive society. Without changing how the criminal justice system views drug addiction we will never see a significant decrease in the crime rate across the United States.…

If the officers are doing what they need to be doing then when they are in the “bad parts of town” they should be getting out and communicating with individuals in the community. When the only time you talk to them is negative, the community is going to have a negative attitude toward the agency. An example that has happened right here in East Texas, that happened a few weeks ago, was when Smith County Deputies were in a “ruff part of town.” Although there were obvious differences between the officers and the residences of this part of Smith County, they got out of their patrol unit and played basketball on the street with some kids who had been playing after school. What these proactive officers were doing was building relationships with the community that they serve which is a key component of effective community policing.…

If I was the police commissioner I would also make sure the department continues to use CompStat as a way to keep both individual officers and the whole department in check. The NYPD currently uses Computer Statistics also known as CompStat as a management tool to maintain data on crime statistics. Through the use of CompStat the department keeps records on crime reduction, personnel and resource management, and improvement in quality of life. It can be considered both a proactive and reactive approach to police management. According to Police Executive Research Forum (2013): For the first time in its history, the NYPD is using crime statistics and regular meetings of key enforcement personnel to direct its enforcement efforts.…

Because of these unfortunate events, communities have begun to not trust police officers and others of law enforcement. This divide has caused many to target the very ones who are to serve and protect. The lack of trust the citizens feel has also caused several in law enforcement to become paranoid and afraid for their lives when on the job. Many communities believe that their law enforcements view them as inferior and abuse their power.…
