The Pros And Cons Of Blended Families

The contemporary family issue that I picked to focus on is blended families and all the struggles that children have. The percentage of blended families in America are, “68% of re-marriages involve children from prior marriages” (The bonded family 2015). A majority of the families that you see are blended in some way or form. 48 percent of marriages will end in a divorce (The bonded family 2015), which says that many children are living in blended homes. Many children struggle with all the change that happens when two families or a new parent comes into the family. I’m from a blended family so I connect well with this topic and feel that I have many different experiences of my own to add to the research that I find. In society now many families are remarried or blended families that struggle with; new relationships with siblings & family, children handling changes in school, and any neglect that the child is feeling from the new additions to the family. New relationships for children is hard because, “As the primary context in which early child development occurs, families provide access to many of the resources that shape children’s first experiences of learning and socialization… The role of siblings has received less attention” (Fomby, 2016). In a new relationship for anyone is hard to know where to start because it is something new and different. The child who has a stepparent is also likely to have stepsiblings, stepaunts, stepuncles, and stepgrandparents.
