A character in a book is a representation of a human, a real human, a human with emotions. Whilst reading a book, one should feel how the characters are feeling as though they were a fellow human. In a marriage, there is a stereotypical saying that those who are married have a happy life; however, that is not the case for John and Ann in the story of “The Painted Door.” They are a married couple living on a small isolated farm in the middle of nowhere and are faced with challenges and struggles as a couple. Donald Murray meticulously developed and laid out ten writing habits he performs in order to hone in on his writing potential. After a self evaluation I came to the realization I possess similar to habits to those of Mr. Murray, but I also have my own. The habit of awareness and connecting seem to interconnect for me. One of the most interesting things when studying a piece of literature is witnessing character development. This is achieved by something called an “epiphany”. An epiphany is defined as “a showing forth, as when an action reveals a character with particular clarity” (1471). After reading Flannery O’Connor’s “Revelation”, Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral”, and William Faulkner’s “Barn Burning”, you easily see how the protagonist in each of those stories experience their own epiphany.
