Completing my work and improving my grades would pay off in the long term as well. When I began applying for college I felt proud to see A’s and B’s on my transcript. Doing my homework became positively reinforcing because my grades improved and my chances of getting in to the college I wanted went up. A long term goal that I also had was to get a job I really wanted at a place that I wanted. I knew that if I didn’t change my actions that I would be punished by being denied a teaching position. I hated the thought of looking back and blaming myself for not changing when I could, so it had to change. A research study on self-efficacy beliefs showed that “Self-efficacy as one of a variety of sociocognitive influences on the career aspirations …show more content…
In an article on self-efficacy, Zimmerman shares how a person has the ability to perform behaviors in ways that pleases them (Zimmerman, 2000). Seeing that the behaviors that I was portraying weren’t pleasing to me I knew that I had the ability to change them. Only I had the control over my own behavior and the environment that I put myself in. I stopped hanging out with my sister and her friends and started dating a guy who was really good for me. We too attended the same football games that I use to with my sister but something was different about it, in a good way. I found myself having just as much fun, if not more, with him that I forgot about all the negative things, (lying) I use to do. He played and still plays a huge part in the person I am today. Using self-efficacy I was able to change my behaviors by placing myself in a more positively rewarding environment where I had fun and received just as much attention. I wasn’t lying to my parents anymore so I had more freedom to do things I wanted to. By changing this undesirable behavior I was rewarded by getting to do more things because they trusted me again. My motivation changed because I began to change personally into the person I had always strived to

Kohn’s article “The Case against Grades” (Kohn, 2011) effectively captures the anxiety that most students have about grades. “In fact, students would be a lot better off without either of these relics from a less enlightened age” (Kohn, 2011) Kohn writes. I agree with Kohn’s position in this article because there were many days in high school where I remember skipping due to the fact that I didn’t fully understand what was being taught to me. I, in turn, grew anxious about not being good enough and started failing.…

Why we need to fail in order to succeed in life. The article “Fail- Safe Students” by Scott Carlson is about a student named Coleman Fitch and how he almost got kicked out of college. The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

My parents have always challenged me to strive to do my best since I was a child. From pushing me to learn how to ride a bike at age five, to striving me to achieve a higher ACT score to attend the college I love, I learned how to become very independent and credible. As I approached my high school years, I changed mentally by creating a positive mindset after my freshman year. As to this day, getting a 3.11-grade point average has affected me in both positive and negative ways. One characteristic that I figured out about myself is that I am a person who learns from mistakes due to the fact that I am a tactile learner.…

Being set apart is about the journey along with the end success. I have set myself apart as a student at Texas Tech due to my leadership, ability to make outside commitments while supporting my course load, and my hard work and ability to overcome adversity. Taking Ap and honors classes I had challenge myself to be the best that I can rather than taking the easy route in life. Nothing is easy because you have to work hard in order to get what you want. At a young age I wanted to prove to my teachers and friends who doubted me that I was more than the words they use on me. As much as it hurts, you can’t always let the words people use on you change the goals you want in life. When I was younger I always had this high image of myself happy and buying all the dogs from the animal shelters and giving money to all the homeless people.…

Gordon B. Hinckley had once said something along the lines of hard work paying off, if effort is enforced into the work. Over the years I’ve had in high school I have really absorbed the aspect of this, being able to work up and achieve opportunities for the preparation in the outside world. Seventh and eighth grade having to understand the concepts in the athletic sport tennis was hard for me to comprehend. Actually being able to have proper etiquette of holding a tennis racquet was key, but being able to hit a tennis ball was a ‘whole other ball game.’ All two years of playing tennis in middle school I can not remember a single time me nor my tennis partner won a match.…
