Competitive Soccer Experience

Improved Essays
My experience of playing competitive soccer shaped my leaderships skills more than any other experience I have had. I played on a big team with a great group of friends in middle school and we were one of the best teams in the state. I was one of the defensive players on the team. Defensive positions are some of the most important on the field because they organize and control the position and movements of the whole team during games. Playing in this position helped start a foundation for my leadership skills but the biggest lesson I learned during the next season. Our team was changing completely because another team was going to join ours. However we had too many players allowed to be on a team so the coaches decided to split the team into …show more content…
My coach then went on to say, “I know this is hard for you to hear but we need someone to help bring this team together and lead them.” I said, “okay” even though I was still irritated. Over the next few weeks I practiced and played teams with the B team and we had a little bit more success but we were not still at the same level of the A team. I tried as best as I could to bring the team together. One tournament I scored goals as a defensive player as I moved up the field to help the offensive unit play together. The lesson I learned from this experience didn't come right away. I learned from this experience that in order to be a leader you have to help where you are most needed. I did not want to be on the second best team but, my coach knew that I would be able to lead this team to improvement. Upon coming to my realization I started to enjoy playing on the team and committed more to my leadership position. I have used the lesson I learned in school to help with school projects by getting my friends to help work. I helped lead groups at church and I hope to use this leadership lesson to lead the tennis team this year as one of the

Therefore, this was a team of small freshmen and sophomores playing against mostly juniors and seniors at the varsity level in one of the most talented high school conferences in the state. We finished the season 1-15, most of which were pretty tough losses but we worked hard and left it all on the field every game and that in the end is all that matters. The most prevalent memory was after the last game all the players were pretty upset about how it went but our coach ended our last huddle with, “We came into this season knowing it would be challenging and we worked hard from start to finish and I think we ended this season better than we started, which means that next year is gonna be a pretty good…

While being a member of a small high school track team, I found it necessary to put in additional training and hard work. As a senior, I felt it was my responsibility to step up and take on the role of leadership, while remembering that it takes a team effort to achieve our goals. The new roll of leadership was to have an impact not only on the team, but for my future endeavors. During a major track meet,…

For the past three years I have played on a competitive soccer team that is currently in the highest division in Ontario, the Ontario Youth Soccer League. I have constantly had to show my leadership on and off the field. I became captain of the team this past year and I play as the last defender back. This means that I am responsible for overseeing the entire team's positioning by being aware of each player as well as vocally directing each player. Therefore, I must always be able to see the entire field in order to properly lead my team.…

My most significant leadership experience would be when I was in the Girls Varsity Tennis Team. I had been in the tennis team during my highschool years, for 2 years. During that time I learned a lot about being a leader, such as what it means to lead others, and what qualities a leader should have. When I first started playing tennis I started at the position on 2nd doubles, to me I took it as that I was not good enough to play against an opponent by myself on the court. Which was entirely true, because when I began playing I was not any good whatsoever.…

Many times in our lives we have the choice to be a leader or a follower. One of the many times that I have chosen a leadership role is when I was on my competitive cheerleading team. During one of our first competitions half of the team forgot our routine and the stunts all fell. While everyone stood there in silence I started saying the words and going through the stunts and routine and everyone followed my lead and we pushed through the embarrassment. I decided to take this leadership role because I knew that everyone was too afraid to be the only one to say the words in fear that no one else would say them too, so I knew that if I put my dignity aside for a moment our team still had a chance to shine and get a good score on our round.…

My coaches Debbie and Marcos couldn’t make any comments or suggestions of how we were playing because they would contradict what they would say. The girls on my team would say, “They’re being mean to us let’s just give up and lose like always.” I stepped up to the plate and talked to my coaches about the situation. Our mission was to at least win a few games as a team, but none of them really cared. My coaches stepped into the situation and gave a speech to my team members.…

Our leadership skills helped us in teaching them and helped them become great little cheerleaders. Without our help, they wouldn’t have been able to have our knowledge in cheerleading and wouldn’t know what it was like to be one. Another way I have demonstrated leadership was through track. For track we have different workouts we do every day. As a leader, I would make sure my group did their full workout and as a hurdler.…

Subsequently, coaches should also try to introduce to the players that all shots must be directed to the goal. Apparently, all shots that are targeted at the goal will score a goal except if it is being intercepted by the opposing player or goal keeper. The next focus for the coach is to introduce to the players that accuracy is the key to scoring. First timers in soccer are always with the tendency of putting power in their shots when learning how to shot.…

Have you ever been on a team that did not have a coach or a leader to guide your team? It is almost impossible to have a team that does not have someone who can lead the team to success in victories but also in one another. I am not completely sure that I would want to be a basketball coach, but I know that one day I plan on being a coach for either volleyball or basketball. Right now I am a volleyball referee about four times a week and I see how people are coached. Coaches are a key component to a successful team.…
