Competitive dancers take months upon months into preparation for a competition, and we don’t realize all it has affected us. My intention is to find out how much dancing competitively can change a dancers life and what it takes to keep up in the harsh world of dance. The question smokes in some aspiring dancer’s minds; what is competitive dance and should I or should I not participate? I have been dancing for thirteen years now, but I just came into the competitive world about five or six years ago. There is a huge difference between recreational and competitive dance and the dancers. The second a dancer gets off stage from competing for the first time, something clicks in their head, and a whole new mentality is started. Competitive dancers dance on a whole different level, you're no longer dancing just to dance, you are dancing to win. As bad as that sentence may sound, it’s true. Every dancer competes to win. It’s a huge disappointment when you don't win or don’t get platinum; and it’s the best feeling when you receive platinum and place in overalls. When the mentality of a dancer changes into competition mode, they get mean. They are there to win and they are going to make sure you know it.
