Obtaining the right mix when it comes to competition and regulation will be delicate. However, because “measuring competition is increasingly important for analysis of health care markets and policies” decision makers must work to explore all options (Baker, 2001, p. 223). Before healthy competition can exist the health status of the patient must be considered. This is because even with coverage to all available there continues to be health disparities “despite … positive developments” in healthcare and coverage (Dankwa-Mullan, & Maddox, 2015, p. s369).
For competition to thrive their must first be changes to the regulation. In doing so all patients representing urban and rural populations and varying demographics must first be considered. Additionally, development of a regulatory plan that guarantees quality aside from coverage type must occur before competition is introduced.
