Competition In Biology

Competition, in biology, is the relationship between members of the same or different species in which individuals are adversely affected by those having the same living requirements, such as food or space. It doesn’t necessarily have to be between members, it can be between a human and the human mind. In specific habitats, organisms compete for resources, such as water, nutrients, space, and mates. Each organism has a niche amidst a given region that includes everything the organism needs to develop, grow and reproduce. Competition doesn’t just occur between only one species, it can be between two or more species. For example, in North America, lynx, coyotes and raptors compete for the same prey. The lynx and coyote are both cats but aren’t …show more content…
By competition, we are able to find the best species, or best individuals of plants and animals for each habitat(diversity). For example, deer, elk and moose are in the same family so they all essentially have the same instincts. These animals have alpha males in their herd. For deer, elk, and moose, they fight for the niche of Alpha Male. The winner, the smartest, most athletic individual obtains role. The alpha male is the individual that carries on the genes in the herd. In other words, the alpha male gets to make all the babies; therefore making the next generation the most intelligent and physical possible within their habitat. If a strong, yet foolish deer became alpha male, the best genes wouldn't be passed on. As you can see, competition affects how generations in nature are carried …show more content…
A majority of the people who don’t have a job, aren’t willing to change. Economically and Socially, there are specific jobs, or niches that need to be obtained, but there is a lack of qualified individuals. For example, a man named Larry McGee, opened a fish store in 2002. He thought forever that he wanted to open this type of business. For the first few months, business was good, but another store that he was competing with had better advertising. Six months into his business, he was suffering. He later determined that the niche of owning a fish store is not for him. Since he closed his store, he has been a fish tank cleaner and maintenance man. By competition, Larry was able fulfill the niche that he was best at which was most necessary for the economy, and himself socially. Competition in the economy, not only got the best member for owning a fish store, but allowed Larry to be the best fish tank maintenance man for the economy. Competition can not only put someone out of business, but it can open up new opportunities for some

America's Economy “We are becoming a society in which the poor tend to stay poor, no matter how hard they work;” (Document A), to countless Americans this sounds like a rigid caste society, the polar opposite of America. Yet, a considerable amount of Americans firmly assert this is the reality of America today. In reality, the economy works relatively the same as it did half a century ago, however, people today are not working as diligently nor as much. The economy, as well as the opportunity of social mobility, is still truly alive but the work ethic needed to achieve it is dead.…

Writing Assignment #1 Lasiognathus dinema There are a couple misconceptions you might have about evolution and natural selection. The strongest and most important organisms do not survive over the generations. Although evolution occurs due to fitness in an individual or individuals of a species, an organism cannot survive over generations. Fitness is achieved through variations in populations of species through genetic differentiation (Scottville “n.d.”). Since the life cycle of all living organisms is to be born, survive, mate, and die, it is impossible for an organism to live through several generations.…

Inherited traits put growth and development into action in not only individual organisms but also the evolutions of species over time. Humans wouldn’t have evolved to who we are now if it wasn’t for inherited traits. In fact all species have adapted and evolved to be unique and distinct. For example a hummingbird that has adapted to have longer bills to be able to reach inside a flower to get nectar. Hummingbirds could die out from having short bills so they evolved throughout generations.…

In “Losing is Good for You” by Ashley Merryman, participation trophies are steering society in the wrong direction, making people feel that participation is now as good as winning. Aside from that, much more money is being spent on trophies because of the purchasing of participation trophies, not just first through third place. Most people now agree that everyone should be equal, therefore, aside from the actual awards, participating awards are now given as well to everyone. This “nonstop recognition” is causing children and young adults to not do as good on everyday activities because either way they know they will get an award. However, if the recognition isn’t given to them, they “collapse at the first experience of difficulty” making them choose other easier unethical methods like cheating or copying.…

An example of a competing domain for the Prey Predator simulator would be a domain where custom software development is used to allow the scientist use the computing power of the system. The Prey Predator simulation family in consideration is a part of creating custom software for scientists and ecologists to utilize with the aim to use software for aiding in experiments. In order to utilize this computing power of the present day we need to be able to interact with the computer to get the desired results. Ecologists are generally not equipped with this knowledge of computer software development, so they usually find engineers with the skillset to write programs and interact with the computers. Scientists and engineers work in collaboration…

Competition, predation and species responses to environmental change In the study that was run they were trying to examine the effects of interspecific competition which is when individuals of different species are competing for the same resources such as food and shelter in an ecosystem and the preying of one species on another species due to species responses to temperature change (Jiang and Kulczycki, 2004). Other experiments have been run on temperature change but they do not have a good understanding of species interaction when the environment changes. This may be due to the fact that past studies only focused on single specie populations or ecosystems as a whole. From these studies they were able to show that due to temperature changes…

This type of interaction is affected by indirect causes of urbanization. Predator-prey relationships The relationship between predator and prey requires a simple definition. Predation, which is another way of saying predator-prey relationship, is the killing of a particular species on a different species to gain nutrients (Baenninger 1978). There are five steps in which this relationship can take place: 1) Searching for relevant stimuli, 2) hunting or chasing…

Evolution has received mostly negative feedback from society, especially from non-scientists. Perhaps, evolution is controversial because it speaks to the beginning of humanity. Controversy originated from individuals’ religious backgrounds and faith in a higher being but they do not consider the definition of evolution. Noted by David Jacobs—Professor of Animal Evolution and Systematics at the University of Cape Town, non-scientists believe evolution states that human evolved from baboons. However, evolution only claims that humans and other non-human primates share a common ancestor (Jacobs, 2015).…
