Competency Skill 8 Task

This week in the field was slower than usual. Many of the tasks completed this week have been performed multiple times throughout my time with Vital Connections. One of the tasks completed this week was filing paperwork for student folders. This was a task where I went through the folders of students who attend Vital Connections and search for any missing information. Information such as health records, parent information, and child information etc. the organization is required to have on file. Therefore, competency skill 8 was applied when completing this task. Competency skill 8 states on a professional level a social worker should be able to, “Demonstrate the skills necessary for effective policy formulation and interpretation.” In some of the children’s files there were health records that required them to have special attention. With this being the case, it was my responsibility to make sure the organization’s policies did not affect these children negatively. In other words, it was my job to make sure the special attention these children needed were not overlooked due to the policies teachers are required to follow while sorting through these files. I was to continue observing children’s behavior in their classroom environment. Competency skill 7 states a professional social worker, “Identify own stages of development and areas of growth based on the following dimension: Biological, spiritual, psychological, socioeconomic, cultural, aesthetic, gender roles and relations.” Although a social worker should be able to notice stages of development and areas of growth in these dimensions within themselves, it is important they be able to notice another individual’s stages of development and areas of growth. Being able to notice the children’s developmental stages will help in being able to predict their behaviors and create intervention if I ever plan to work with kids in the
