Competency Goal 1
Functional Area 1: Safe
It is important to maintain a safe environment for students inside and outside of the classroom. My goal is to make sure that the children understand what being safe is. I make sure that they know how to play safe. All of the toys and the materials that the children use are safe. I make sure that there are no broken toys that may harm them around. The children along with me create the class rules. I make sure that the outlet plugs are in place and that the cabinets are secure. The children follow the classroom rules. We wash hands in the mornings when mornings when the children come in. We also wash before and after breakfast, before and after lunch, and before and after snack. During nap time the children are placed head to feet with three feet between them. I make sure each child has their own cot and sheet. The sheets are also washed weekly. The restrooms are always stocked with tissue, paper towels, and soap. I check the restrooms to make sure the floors are not wet and that the toilet seats and sinks are sanitized. We allow the children to brush teeth once a day. We have a routine to show them how to brush and we make sure that we clean the sinks when they are done. The toothbrushes are stored in a caddy with individual slots so that there is no cross contamination. I also make sure that the children have the right amount of healthy food according to the CAFCP program.
Functional Area 3: Learning Environments
One of my goals in the functional area of Learning Environments is to see that the children are free to learn. I allow the children to learn while they play. When they are engaged in the different centers there is learning material provided. I ask them to point out shapes and colors of different toys that they play with. This allows the children to form positive relationships. I always encourage positive actions and conversations. I help the children to become more independent and confident with their learning.
