The initials RN or title of Registered Nurse is understood by all to mean a nurse that has passed his or her boards. However, not many outside of the health care field understand all the educational levels associated with this title. While formal education began with a nurse receiving either a diploma or baccalaureate degree, today numerous educational degrees have stemmed from this beginning. These programs were developed to increase the number of nurses in response to a shortage. These degrees are differentiated by the level of education the nurses has received. Many use this degree as an entry way into the nursing field. “Associate degree nursing programs prepare technical bedside nurses for secondary care settings, such as community hospitals and long-term health care facilities.” (Friberg, E., & Creasia, J., 2016, p. 24). The nurse is awarded a two year associates degree as well as being eligible to sit for state boards. While the associate degree seems very similar to that of a baccalaureate degree the difference between the two lies in the education that is received. “Associate degree nursing programs are designed to be two years in length and consist of basic general education requirements necessary for entry into clinical nursing courses.” (Friberg, E., & Creasia, J., 2016, p. 24). Research has shown that lower mortality rates, fewer medication errors, and positive outcomes are all linked to nurses prepared at the baccalaureate and graduate degree levels.” (Rosseter, R., (2015, March, 19).
