1. Explain how you made or would make an ethical decision by applying the standards of the NASW Code of Ethics, relevant laws and regulations, models for ethical decision-making, ethical conduct of research, and additional codes of ethics as appropriate to context
The Department of Aging and Independent Living (DAIL) handles the guardianship over individuals that have been deemed by the court to be incompetent, and unable to take care of themselves. In these situations, the families of the individual have either refused or been unable to obtain guardianship. The first part of the model is to examine the issue; the client wants to spend time with his girlfriend, overnight, with no supervision. Due to the client having guardianship, he is only allotted two hours unsupervised during the day. The ethical issue with the client’s request is the possibility of exploitation, or an unsafe situation. The client has a history with being exploited, or putting himself in harm’s way, without understanding the repercussions (Fossen, Anderson-Meger, Zellmer, …show more content…
My personal values conflict with this issue, because I’ve had a limited amount of time working with this case. Upon meeting the client, he was able to have an in-depth conversation, and discuss how he was feeling about his new job placement. The client then asked the guardianship worker if he could have the overnight visit, and at the time I did not see this as an unreasonable request. After my first initial meeting with the client I was then told about his diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment. I felt conflicted over this situation, due to my limited knowledge of the client, and realizing the extent of guardianship and the role that it plays in a person’s life. I was then told about the difficulty the client had with people exploiting him, and how the client had issues with determining when he was in an unsafe situation. I could rationalize with the client wanting some alone time with his girlfriend, and could understand that the client wanted privacy (Fossen, et al, 2014). The third part of the Ethic model is to hypothesize different possible scenarios that could happen with this client. The first scenario is if Guardianship approved his request for the overnight visit, then the client would be happy because he was granted the overnight stay, but with no supervision the client is at risk for being exploited or in an unsafe environment.
