Because hospitals are often short staffed, high nurse to patient ratios are not uncommon and while quantitative care increases, qualitative care decreases. In short, when nurses have fewer patients, they are more likely to notice and prevent errors that could be potentially life-threatening to the patient. Hospital administrators however refuse to hire more nurses because it is not seen as cost-effective.
