Compassion And Human Touch In The Emergency Room

Decent Essays
I applaud you and your colleagues for utilizing compassion and human touch towards each patient. It's very rare to have that personal touch in a Emergency/Trauma setting. I work in an Urgent Care and unfortunately the providers that spends extra time with patients aren frown upon. They prefer that the patients are in and out as quickly as possible. Regardless of how important technology is in medicine, nothing takes the place of personal touch and excellent bedside manner.

I participated in a discussion just a few days ago with a fellow nurse and a nurse anesthetist regarding respecting staff and ensuring patient safety. We were able to come up with an approach to heighten patient safety and recognize the value of everyone’s role in patient care. Another colleague asked for my assistance in developing a tool to aid nurses in planning for staffing. The tool we created will provide the documentation necessary for increased staffing on days when patient acuity is higher than normal.…

An intensive care Paramedic will work with nurses and doctors in Emergency Departments of hospitals or other health care facilities and in special circumstances will work with nurses and doctors out in the field. So what is next? We’ve identified that compassion fatigue is an issue. The problem is that there are not programs readily available to nurses to help counter compassion fatigue. According to Boyle (2011), Continuing education programs that augment basic emotional-support competencies in the practice setting are necessary. Strategies for talking with and supporting patients and families under stress, or for dealing with complex family scenarios, are seldom taught in basic nursing programs.…

In my initial phase of volunteering at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, I spent 24 hours learning to professionally transport and communicate with patients. Following training, I commenced my role as a hands-on-care volunteer at DFCI. I currently provide cancer patients with hand massage as they undergo their infusion. IVs are often placed in various regions of the hand so I learn to adapt to differing circumstances to maximize the care and relaxation each patient receives.…

When faced with a strenuous period in life, people develop coping mechanisms. However, some mechanisms can be disastrous such as drinking. Compassion fatigue is no exception with substance abuse being one of its behavioral signs. Substance abuse is “well known to …have a negative effect on their family” (www.drugs.ie), and robs the ability of the provider to relate with family. The effects of compassion fatigue on health care professionals is a natural response to witnessing repeated trauma over a lifetime.…

All of the workplace stressors were the norm and the patients were the burden. Staff did bring up valid points around the “inappropriate use” of the ER such as patients who uses the ER for a primary care office or primary care offices sending patients to the ER due to access issues. Regardless of the reason, all patients deserve respect and compassion. This really broke my heart as the reason I became an ER nurse was because I enjoyed being at patients most vulnerable point. Nonetheless, of the fact that I may have known it wasn’t a “true emergency”, the patients felt it…

The PCT’s, or patient care technicians, are a hugely supportive resource that the nurses have. They go around and take vitals every hour and report to the nurse where they are at, as well as any other issues the patient may have mentioned to them. The nurses rely on them for a huge number of things, and are able to communicate very affectively what they need help with, or would like done. The nurse-doctor interaction that I witnessed was very professional. The surgeon came to the patient’s room and made the nurse gather all the supplies he needed, she got a little irritated because he did not inform her he would be needing all the materials beforehand.…

Nursing philosophy is based not only on personal ideals and morals, but also professional training. It has been defined as the thoughts on what is believed to be true about the nursing profession and provides the principal and ethical values we hold to our beliefs in nursing. The ability to care for people, as well as nursing itself, is both an art and a science. Since starting my nursing career in nursing in 1994, I will always continue to provide competent, empathetic, and compassionate care to all my patients to the best of my ability. My personal nursing philosophy is one that is essential to me and revolves around the three concepts of compassion, professionalism, and accountability.…

I feel that the preoperative briefing that took place before the patient arrived is what allowed the team to work so well in this emergency case, all of the details that was known about the patient was shared to the entire theatre team, with enough time to be able to prepare and collect all the appropriate equipment that was needed but also equipment that was possibile needed so that all avenues of care was covered and prepared. Bethune (2011) stated that teamwork, communication, and efficiency in the operating theatre is widely recognised to be suboptimal. Poor communication is the single biggest cause of medical error. I agree, the nurse was very good displaying proper techniques. At work, we use the name and birth date identifiers as well. I usually say, "for your safety, would you please verify your name and date of birth". Not many people ask why I am doing that, stating the safety reasons, along with the question usually tells them why. In my opinion: I agree that safety and respect need to be part of every interaction with others, not just with patients, but there is a growing madness that is put on nurses these days of patient satisfaction.…
