The stories "The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson" and "The Wise Old Women" both support the universal theme that value is not found in your physical abilities. Both of these stories express the idea that our elders should not shunned or looked down upon, but praised for their wisdom and experience. In the story "The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson", an old man is treated like a nuisance by his very own son and daughter in law. They don't see how cruel and mean they are to the old man until their little son says that one day, he will take care of them, the same way they take care of his grandfather. In the story "The Wise Old Women", a young lord declares that everyone 71 years of age and older must be sent to the mountains

He has little sight, little hearing, and has very little teeth. In the second story "The Wise Old Women" the mother of the farmer is very kind, old and wise. In both of these folktales the elders are treated like they are useless. They are seem as weak and unlike everyone else. In the first story it explains how the grandfather wasn't even allowed to eat with his family. In the second story families and loved ones were torn apart. In both stories we see how family staying together is not of importance, but being strong and capable is. The stories also show a very weak side of elderly people and explained how the people in the story only saw that one side of them. What people in the story didn't see was that the Mother was incredibly wise and she saved her village without even having to lift a finger. What the parents didn't see in the story was that what they were doing to their dad/dad in law, was their inevitable future. Finally, both stories support the theme that a person's value, doesn't necessarily need to be found in their physical …show more content…
In the first story the grandfather is treated terribly. His daughter in law and his son think he is a nuisance and quite annoying. They make him eat meals alone by himself in the corner. Since they lived back in the old days, when something was broken it was a big deal, so when the grandfather broke the bowl it was bad.
Because he broke the bowl, he was looked down upon and scolded. In the second story the elders were trespassed even worse. The lord of the village sent all of the elders to the mountains to die. The lord thought that all people 71 years of age and older were useless and would poison his perfect village. Although in both of these stories the elders were treated terribly, once the people realized what they were doing, they had different motivations to stop their cruel

“Age is just a number” is an old saying that has been profoundly refuted in “The Marrow of Tradition” by Charles Chesnutt. In the novel, the age of an individual heavily influenced the characters’ beliefs and behaviors. Depending on whether a character was from the newer or older generation, their views about race and the status of their interracial relationships was affected. In situations dealing with white supremacy and black progression, older individuals, both white and black, tended to be content with keeping blacks in an inferior position.…

I believe the theme of O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is violence grace. When speaking about this short story, O'Connor states, “I have found that violence is strangely capable of returning my characters to reality and preparing them to accept their moment of grace.” In the story, every member of the family act rude and are very self-absorbed. The character who is most selfish is the grandmother.…

The narrator’s use of old age resembles the qualities and characteristics of an old person. Old people are often thought to be gracious and sweet towards others. They are essentially vulnerable to the other age groups because they are physically and mentally weaker. For these reasons, society reveals that old people give off good feelings since they mean no harm to anyone else. In like manner,…

A prevalent perception of old simply denotes maleficent in folk land. Perhaps because being old is diametrical to being puerile and the adolescent is visually perceived as vibrant, pristine and able. In the stories optically discerned in the class discussion, the story that most resembles the partial theory predicated by folktale authors about the old would be Giambattista’s rendition of Slumbering Resplendency- Sun, Moon and Taila. The story dots the Queen as the main antagonist while we can visually perceive during sundry times and by characters in the book different forms of evils being perpetuated.…

Delight and distress can be the words to describe life depending on a person’s view of it. Raymond Carver, a prominent short story author, demonstrates this in his stories, “A Small, Good Thing, and “The Bath”. Both stories deal with a father and mother’s departure from their joyful life to a one with misery after their son’s death. “A Small, Good Thing” and “The Bath” contain the same general plot, but the differences are evidently present. While "A Small, Good Thing" and "The Bath" both offer the same broad story, most readers can agree on that "A Small, Good Thing" is superior as it provides significantly more explanations and character development.…

The bible has many insights on why it is wrong to disrespect defenseless elderly people. In the catholic Bible it says “hearken to your father who begot you and do not despise your mother when she is old”(proverbs 23:22). This teaches the importance of not turning your back on parents when they are old. Parents do a lot for their child and should be taken care of as they age. Still, many times children unjustly neglect, steal, and abuse their parents when they can not longer tend their needs.…

“The Wise Old Woman” retold by Yoshiko Uchida was a story about a cruel young ruler of a village who decreed that anyone over the age of seventy-one will be brought up to the mountains to die, and he was happy with his village until another cruel leader by the name of Lord Higa threatened to take over their village if they didn’t meet his tasks, until a farmer’s mother (who was over seventy-one but her son didn’t want to kill her so he hid her instead) started finding the answers to Lord Higa's “impossible” tasks, and when the young lord asked him how he solved them the farmer said, in a scared manner, that his mother was the one who solved the tasks. Expecting to be punished the lord surprisingly had a change of heart toward the elderly and…
