The stories "The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson" and "The Wise Old Women" both support the universal theme that value is not found in your physical abilities. Both of these stories express the idea that our elders should not shunned or looked down upon, but praised for their wisdom and experience. In the story "The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson", an old man is treated like a nuisance by his very own son and daughter in law. They don't see how cruel and mean they are to the old man until their little son says that one day, he will take care of them, the same way they take care of his grandfather. He has little sight, little hearing, and has very little teeth. In the second story "The Wise Old Women" the mother of the farmer is very kind, old and wise. In both of these folktales the elders are treated like they are useless. They are seem as weak and unlike everyone else. In the first story it explains how the grandfather wasn't even allowed to eat with his family. In the second story families and loved ones were torn apart. In both stories we see how family staying together is not of importance, but being strong and capable is. The stories also show a very weak side of elderly people and explained how the people in the story only saw that one side of them. What people in the story didn't see was that the Mother was incredibly wise and she saved her village without even having to lift a finger. What the parents didn't see in the story was that what they were doing to their dad/dad in law, was their inevitable future. In the first story the grandfather is treated terribly. His daughter in law and his son think he is a nuisance and quite annoying. They make him eat meals alone by himself in the corner. Since they lived back in the old days, when something was broken it was a big deal, so when the grandfather broke the bowl it was bad.
Because he broke the bowl, he was looked down upon and scolded. In the second story the elders were trespassed even worse. The lord of the village sent all of the elders to the mountains to die. The lord thought that all people 71 years of age and older were useless and would poison his perfect village. Although in both of these stories the elders were treated terribly, once the people realized what they were doing, they had different motivations to stop their cruel
