Antigone v. Antigone
In both plays Antigone by Anouilh and Antigone by Sophocles there is a main character named Antigone. Antigone was officially written by Sophocles in 441 B.C then later rewritten by Anouilh during the Nazi occupation. Since the two stories were written in two different time frames the stories are a little bit different in many ways including characters and their characteristics, symbolisms and theme. Why should someone feel sympathetic for one stupid actions, for someone who has had several chances for life but chose death for no good reason but for rebellion? Also during this play I feel as if Antigone is more of an emotional person then she was in Sophocles version. Antigone written by Anouilh was written during the Nazi occupation in France. Unlike the theme in Sophocles Anouilh version is about war. During the play Creon represents the Nazi’s and Antigone represent the rebellion of France. Throughout the play Antigone goes through the same troubles as the Sophocles version of Antigone except she goes through different conflicts and also Creon wasn’t as much as a controlling king like he was in Sophocles’ play. Creon actually gave Antigone a chance to live but she said if she is let go she will continue to burying her brothers grave so h had no choice. Like we talked about in Sophocles version Antigone died with purpose. She defended her family and honored the Gods by obeying the law of the Gods, but in Anouilh’s version I was unable to find a real good reason that should make me sympathetic. Another reason why I feel less sympathetic is because Antigone tries to bury her brother even though Creon says not to but since this play was written during the Nazi occupation the belief of honoring the Gods like people did back in
