Comparison Of The Renaissance In Romeo And Juliet

The Renaissance is desribed to be the "rebirth" of literature, philosophy, and ideology from ancient times like the Roman society. Although the rebirth of literature, philosophy, and ideology sounds favorable to our society, the Renaissance was not superlative. The Renaissance is proven to be about fabrication of perfection and misinterpretation of love and greatness. This is proven true in two works written in the Renaissance time named The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli and the Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet where corruption and distorted love is evident. Analyzing these two works, we will reveal the truth behind Renaissance and Machiavellian beliefs of love and inequity and how noblemen are supposed to act. Although these belief from the Renaissance may seem farfetched from modern day, these ideas are closer to us than they appear. A …show more content…
This is seen in the balcony scene where Juliet warns Romeo that although she wants Romeo to stay, he cannot for he will be in trouble by the guards at the Capulet home stating, "And the place death, considering who thou art, If any of my kinsmen find thee here," and despite the fact Romeo refuses to leave Juliet also says, "If they do see thee, they will murder thee." Juliet thinks many things through, proving her to be Machiavellian. As said above, Machiavellian is a term to be cunning, thinking before acting as which Juliet does in this occasion. Romeo also progresses to be more Machiavellian where the role switches in Act 3 scene 5, the morning after Romeo spends the night with Juliet. Juliet quotes, "Wilt thou be gone? it is not yet near day: It was the nightingale, and not the lark," while Romeo explains, "It was the lark, the herald of the morn, No nightingale .... Farewell, farewell! one kiss, and I’ll descend," which Romeo is justifying that it is morning and he must leave before getting killed by the guards instead of staying with

Star-Crossed Lovers The Shakespearean play, Romeo and Juliet, is one of the worlds most known tragedies. Rather than the use of a bright setting, director Franco Zeffirelli uses techniques using music to support their love in the scene, while another director by the name of Baz Luhrmann primarily uses setting rather than the film’s music. Both cinematic versions of the same play are different from each other in the way they are directed. Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann use cinematic techniques of setting and music differently to show the theme of love.…

During Romeo and Juliet's first meeting the theme of sudden and forceful love is heavily alluded to. The theme describes a situation in which love is extremely sudden, such as love at first sight, and powerful enough to make previous situations or plans seem insignificant. Though Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet and the scene displayed in Act 1 Scene 5 are notably different, due to them being represented in different mediums, they both touch on this theme using specific diction and details. In Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet the theme is conveyed through the song, “ What is a Youth” , which was playing in the background of their first meeting as well as the meeting itself.…

Romeo and Juliet Essay When comparing both the 1968 Franco Zeffirelli movie version of Romeo and Juliet with the 1996 Baz Luhrmann movie of Romeo + Juliet, I feel that the newer movie by Baz Luhrmann is more effective. It is more effective because it is able to tell the story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare in a way that younger generations can understand. This 1996 version is easier to understand because people can relate to the movie as well as follow the storyline. Two specific ways the movie is superior are the costumes and the setting.…

Two unsuspecting children find the love of their lives, causing misfortune throughout the city of Verona, Italy. Zeffirelli’s interpretation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet covers the tragedy and action that the original novel captured. Zeffirelli’s use of clothing in the movie depicted the level of wealth the people had and also what family they belonged to, by having the Montagues and Capulets wearing time appropriate clothing. Not only did the clothing show the time period, the use of setting did as well. From crumbling dirt and stone paver roads to huge castles and wooden stands on the streets, the setting is what helped display the time period and the city where everything took place.…

Franco Zeffirelli did a fantastic job portraying Shakespeare’s vision of Romeo and Juliet (1968 film). The horrible tragedy of the fate of two teenagers due to the consequence of an unreasonable feud between their two families, the Montague and the Capulets. A timeless story of young forbidden love that cannot and will not be stopped by anything other than death. Romeo and Juliet has always been a story of a deep passionate and pure love that we have all wished for, of course not to the same end. I believe the play to have succeeded on the level of storytelling and having the audience become emotionally invested in the outcome.…

This is particularly demonstrated in Act 2.2, when Juliet performs a poetic soliloquy exclaiming, “O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name. Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love. And I 'll no longer be a Capulet”, suggesting that even if Romeo refuses to sacrifice his status she is willing to forfeit her own.…

Romeo has a melodramatic reaction to the news. The friar gives a speech about how Romeo is acting like a woman and how he should be thankful for this merciful punishment. After his circumlocution, the friar informs Romeo that he will help out Romeo by setting him up to spend the night with Juliet before he sets off to Mantua. Once again, the friar is relying on the chance that the Capulets will not come into Juliet’s room during the night and the watchmen will not see the two of them. In addition, this may make it even harder for Romeo to leave Juliet the next day.…

This foreshadows Romeo’s death, as he leaves Juliet for the last time. Since the knowledge of Romeo’s death is present, the foreshadowing allows us to see how fate will unfold the future upon them. Literary critic Robert N. Watson states, “In a play laden with foreshadowings, and fates adumbrated since birth, Juliet here shows her precocious and prodigious determination to see what others might perceive as a dangerous fall as instead a positive choice…” (16). Throughout the play, the indications of the inevitable death of Romeo and Juliet allow for the exaggeration of dramatic irony. When Juliet portrays Romeo as deceased, it emphasizes the fact that the two will never be together on earth, but in heaven instead.…
