Erin Gruwell is a first year teacher at the newly integrated school,Woodrow Wilson High School. These students are considered “unteachable” and staff members, like the junior English teacher and head of the English department, claim they only show up because of the state laws. At the start of the school year, the students want absolutely nothing to do with any person that is not the same race. Upon entrance of the classroom, they mangle desks into an accumulation of races and what they view as differences. The importance of this is that the students really are not all that different from one another. Any viewer of the movie can feel the tension between the different groups. To minimize the tension and segregation in the classroom, Mrs. Gruwell introduces “the line game” to the adolescents. The game shows the young adults the similarities they all have to one another. This learning activity sparks an idea in Gruwell and inspired her to assign the students creative writing notebooks. In them, the incohesive freshman write about their own personal experiences with gang violence, domestic violence, substance abuse, and racial tension. In these …show more content…
One of the students, Eva, says, “It's all about color, it's about people deciding what you deserve, about people wanting what they don't deserve” (“Freedom Writers(2007)”). Instead of looking down upon one another because of circumstances people are born into, society should lift one another up. The public should not be deciding what people deserve from a first glance because of their race, habits, gang involvement, or situation. The decision is not a bystander’s opinion or determination, it is the decision of the actions by the examinee. Being separated and rude should not be accepted. After all, every human is the same on the inside, despite race, religion, or group allegiance. Every individual feels the same, breathes the same, and lives the same. No one should have control over the way a human can feel and the emotions they discover. What matters is the kindness, compassion, and encouragement displayed by . In a world full of hate, it is easy to allow difficult situations to engulf and consume people’s minds and attitudes, but if society changes the character it puts forward and emits tenderness, cannot be overwhelmed by the darkness of any current

Instead of educating the students on racial disparity the teachers promoted racial segregation. One teacher admitted placing the “rednecks” and the black students on opposite sides, stationing herself in the middle of the classroom to suppress conflict between the two (Hardie 2013). The advanced classes consisted of 98 percent of middle class white students while the “rednecks”, Hispanics and black students attended the classes that were not big on academics showing the racial disparity in the classrooms. The school furthermore showed disparities handing out tardy slips. The black students were likely to receive a slip for coming to class late, even if entering as the bell’s ringing.…

Racial segregation and racism is one of the world’s major issues today. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exists in schools and anywhere else where social lives are occurring. It is obvious that racism is not a good thing as it was many decades ago and it is still occurring in society especially in schools even though the government abolished it several decades ago. Two articles—“Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” by Beverly Tatum and “From Still Separate, Still Unequal: America’s Educational Apartheid” by Jonathan Kozol—present two opposite views on the desire to resolve the inequality in public education. On the other hand, Tatum focuses on African American racial identity development and the role…

In January, the researcher began her student teaching with the intention of finding out how reading and discussing equality-related literature influences students’ attitudes toward race. She planned to have her students read a few texts with race as a central theme, and she would study their change or stagnation in attitude toward race over the semester through a triangulation process. Her data collection would begin and end with Harvard’s Project Implicit Race IAT, found at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html, and a survey on attitudes toward race, which can be accessed in the appendix. During the research, she would use journal entries to assess her students’ attitudes for change or no change. In total, the research…

As part of our class readings for this year, our last assigned reading tackles the very controversial topic of race in this country. One of these examples of this division in race occurs with the ongoing discussion of police brutality in our local communities. From Ferguson to Baltimore, this has been a fervent discussion for many years. One of the books that discusses this policing in local communities is ”Punished:…

The Film shows a positive outlook on inner city kids who are struggling to find their way. The beginning of the film depicts the true violence of the school by having a school shooting occur. The Film shows many graphic and intense scenes but it portrays the correct image of what these students go through. The film also showed positive companionship through a mix of races and a need to succeed. It showed a great comparison between Anne Frank and the students and helped relate to them.…

People learn to hate from young age , and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite” (Mandela). The act of racism and inequality within the school system can be dated back to 1896 with the Plessy V. Ferguson case, which resulted in “ separate facilities for education” and an “ equal education”(123helpme). The lack of cultural diversity and ignorance exist all around us within today's society.…
