Both the film Star Wars: A New Hope Directed by George Lucas and comic, The Watchmen by Alan Moore had one thing in common. In the comic novel and film, the “superhero" protagonists are white heterosexual men. Neither Princess Leia nor Laurie Juspeczyk have plot lines of their own instead they revolve around men. In The Watchmen and Star Wars: A New Hope both author and director are male and give their characters a male protagonist role. In The Watchmen, Alan Moore introduces his character Rorschach who prefers to use brains more than fighting to enhance his character. This can be perceived as men’s intelligence is being valued more highly than women`s. Laurie Juspeczyk`s mother Sally acted like a talent agent for Laurie, introduced

For example we can see in The Watchmen, the women are the only ones who conceal their identities like a veil. Silhouette, Silk and Laurie and are also the ones who wear provocative clothing, while the men dress in common superhero attire. When we look at physical attributes, the women are slender in build, and do not carry any sort of armor. Also similar to The Watchmen, Princess Leia is fully dressed, but not as overly sexualized as the female superheroes. Princess Leia’s dress is also elegant and not revealing. However, we must take into consideration that she is a princess and not a superhero. Princess Leia clings to an image of herself as wounded and needy, but there are lots of indicators to imply this is not really who she is at all. Princess Leia’s presence gives the notion that women must always look a certain way in order to affirm their femininity. Throughout the first movie, she’s shown in a white dress. To the subconscious mind, this is meant to suggest she is a virginal character, and innocent in some ways, even though we see the duality of her nature in her maturity in the face of war. However, the “show” of color and the implication of her virginal status remain. She later emerges from the Death Star’s torture chamber with no signs of visible distress but once freed, she grabbed a …show more content…
Unlike a lot of the lack of respect for women that we see in The Watchmen, Princess Leia portrays as more authoritative compared to most of the men she is surrounded by and ultimately, they answer to her. Princess Leia holds a lot more confidence, however she is not fleshed out in the way that fully developed characters are. Princess Leia can be seen as one-dimensional because she does not have a weakness, she doesn’t progress over the course of the movie, and her actions aren’t always seen as truly her own. As we have seen before, Princess Leia was not rewarded for her battles the same way Han Solo and Luke Skywalker were. As for The Watchmen, Laurie is shown speculating about getting a new costume with protective leather and a mask, and perhaps a gun. She also says “Silk Specter” is too girly and she wants a new name. This is an implication that she is breaking through from the comic`s traditional costumes for something of her own identity. In doing so, she’s able to forgive her mother for pushing her daughter too hard “you never did anything wrong by me,” she tells her mom. We see that at the end, Laurie gets what she wants. We see that she wants to create her own identity, not remain as her mother`s ideal. She is giving herself a new brand, and a better

Christopher Bell’s Ted Talk uses both real-world examples and numerical data to effectively argues that both male and female characters should be presented and marketed equally to both genders and that the public pedagogy negatively impacts children’s identities, although he effectively argues that genders should treated more equal he fails to justify if the companies are intentionally saying that the princesses are messes up the public pedagogy of the other princesses. A point Bell makes that supports the idea the companies intentionally saying that the princesses mess up the public pedagogy is that the Disney store would not put Princess Leia merchandise in their store. "’We have no intention of putting Princess Leia merchandise in the store.’"…

The stories Star Wars, Hunger Games, and Ender’s Games all compare and contrast the way Luke, Katniss, and Ender go through the Hero’s Journey. One way they contrast is, the Call to Adventure because Luke is invited to go to Alderaan and Katniss is forced through a drawing. On the other hand, Ender is invited to go with the potential of being able to learn to stand up for himself. One way they compare is, they refuse to go away because their families need them there. Ender refuses because he doesn’t want to leave Valentine.…

This is because she internalizes that being a woman is dressing to impress and not embarrass. Another reason why Sally has self-hatred is because she does not like working and views it as unfeminine. Not only does Sally hate being a working woman but she is embarrassed by it because like her women "learned that truly feminine women do not want careers, higher education, political rights-the independence and the opportunities that the old-fashioned feminists fought for" (Friedan, 16). Sally thinks being a working woman is embarrassing and unfeminine because she internalized that working is unfeminine and by being a working woman she is not truly feminine. I want Sally to understand that there is more to being a woman than looks and money.…

Gal Gadot has certainly proven that she can go toe-to-toe with men -- in real life and in her "Wonder Woman" movie. So why is she the only one of four people honored -- three are men -- on GQ's 2017 People of the Year covers who has to expose her skin? A Newsweek contributor asks this question in a new report on sexism in Hollywood (and everywhere). The headline by Mary Kaye Schilling, "Only Gal Gadot Has to Show Skin on GQ's People of the Year Covers" explores how, despite the Israeli actress' skyrocketing career and role as an "accidental feminist," she still has to succumb to pressure from magazine executives to expose as much skin as necessary -- for the benefit of their male target audience.…

Using physics, we can calculate the mass of a bolt fired from a blaster used in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. First of all, we know that these bolts are not lasers based on two facts: they can be seen from the side and they do not travel at the speed of light. Thus, from there, we have to find their velocity. Rhett Allain calculated that to be about 35 m/s. He did this by finding distance and time of various bolts fired throughout the series, dividing the two measurements, and averaging out all the quotients. In other words, he used the formula average velocity is equal to distance divided by time.…

Female protagonists, such as the new Star Wars heroine Rey, are not getting the deserved recognition, especially when it comes down to the merchandise business. Most Millennials and the Generation Z, have already accepted the actuality that Star Wars has always been a categorized as a boy movie. From droid armies to severed limbs thanks to plasma blades powered by kyber crystals, how could females appreciate such a film? Certainly, there are some female characters like Princess Leia and Padme Amidala, however, these royal beauties, quite frankly, will never compare to characters like Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker. Not many movies depict women as strong or heroic.…

The Revolutionary War is actually very similar to the movie we all know, “Star Wars: A New Hope” by George Lucas. They are plenty of similarities such as Luke SkyWalker and America willing to fight for rights, George Washington and Obiwan Kanobi, The Emperor and King George, Darth Vader and the British Army. Comparing these characters and their similarities makes me realize how closer they are to each other than what they seem to be. The first similarity is in comparing Luke SkyWalker and America fighting for rights as compared to The Emperor and King George.…

In the book and movie, the characters seemed to have the same motivation for their actions. They all had a reason to want to discover the body, and it became more obvious throughout the book and movie what their motivation was. The book and movie both portrayed the boys as a very close group, each having their own bond with each other. On the journey, during the night the boys all wake up and have a deep meaningful conversation about their lives. They also depicted Gordie’s group and Ace’s gang to hate each other which is very obvious in both mediums.…

When she accepts her role as leader, her village applauded her ability and respects her as their queen. The other point is she shows the ultimate independence, the long journey on a boat with only a chicken, she teaches herself to sail across the ocean, and completing her mission alone to save her island can be a perfect example. That is when I ask people, “how can a princess be more independent, both physically and mentally, can Moana be?”. She is the perfect example of a woman fighting by herself and not dependent on any person, thinking by herself to solve problems, and achieving her dreams by her own through hard work. The last point I would like to mention about Moana is that, she has a good and strong relationship with other women in her life, which is something we have yet to see in a Disney movie as all the princesses are fighting with others women for a prince or have a bad relationship with their own family member just because of a prince.…

There was such an abundance of merchandise, that now things like mugs that resemble the characters and action figures are still considered collectables today. Since the franchise is still producing movies, there will always be certain merchandise being taken off the market, which means there will always be new collectable emerging within the franchise. These collectables are what keeps merchandising companies in constant competition, and therefor fueling constant publicity and merchandising. Star Wars massive success in publicizing and merchandising has made a massive impact on culture. When this happens, a film’s popularity and controversy can make waves in society, such as the feminist views from the earlier films.…
