The theme of “So Much Water So Close to Home” is of doubt and mistrust. On the other hand, the theme of “Punishment” is that saying the truth is a really important thing, and that if you go around the truth and lie, it could cause a lot of problems for yourself or others. Another difference is that the setting of “Punishment” is meant to be in old times and that the setting of “So Much Water So Close to Home” is a bit more modern. They both portray the rights of women but in totally different ways. The woman in “Punishment” obviously have no rights at all and have no say in anything. This is portrayed because the husband blames his wife without taking her opinion first because it obviously did not matter. On the other hand, the woman in “So Much Water So Close to Home” has a say in things because her husband cares about her opinion and what she thinks of him. Also, the wife goes to the funeral without asking or taking the opinion of her husband and the husband just says “Sure.”
