Both texts being written and set in the late, Victorian period, suggest there will be similarities in the way sex and gender is represented. The heavily patriarchal make-up of society means that the texts inevitably deal with an imbalance of power of men and women. Whilst both texts deal with similar ideas in the oppression of women, the different genre and style of each text means the reader and audience have to respond in different ways. In ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ for example, the first person epistolary form puts us directly in the head of someone who is believed to be mentally unstable.
