Andrew Dufresne, known as Andy in the film is the main character. He is a young man sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife and her lover. A crime he says he didn't commit. Andy had a quiet way about him and the other inmates took notice to that quickly. In the film, it is stated that “He strolled, like a man in a park without a care in the world”. When first arriving, other inmates were taking bets on how long he would last but Andy proves them wrong and truly makes a difference in the prison. He is a brittle old man who has spent most of his life in prison and is also a part of Reds gang. He holds the job of the librarian during the film Andy becomes brooks assistant and they build a heart wrenching bond. Brooks cares for a crow he found while working on the yard that he calls Jake and has cared for it during his stay at the prison. In the film brooks shows that he is at peace with his life in prison. Towards the end of the film, Brooks gets the news that he is getting paroled and attempts to get new charges to insure he does not get released. In this scene, we see how emotional and scared brooks is to face the outside world. Once brooks is released from prison he has a hard time trying to adjust to living outside of the Shawshank prison and wants nothing more than to return
