In the text of Taming of the Shrew, William Shakespeare’s representation of the character Petruchio Verona is altered through modern adaptions BBC ShakespeaRe-Told’s Taming of the Shrew (2005) directed by David Richards and 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) directed by Gil Junger. Changes in the modernisations of the text can be examined through the difference in Petruchio’s motives for wooing Katherine. Through the adaptions of Taming of the Shrew Petruchio’s way of taming the shrew is also different. Another difference between the revisions of the play is Petruchio’s appearance and dress. Through the modern versions of the text, Petruchio’s character has been manipulated to fit in with modern expectations of marriage and relationships. …show more content…
In the play written by William Shakespeare, Petruchio’s motive is to find a rich wife because after his father Antonio died he had not been left with the riches that he expected except for the few crowns in his pockets. Shakespeare was likely to make this the case because in the Medieval Period men expected a wife who would be able to bear sons for him, especially if they were of a wealthy family. In the ShakespeaRe-Told’s version of Taming of the Shrew Petruchio is determined to marry well, after being thrown out of Australia because his father had died and he needed money. Director David Richards was likely to use this as Petruchio’s motive because in modern times, men don’t have the same expectations of marriage as they did in Shakespeare’s time. The aspect of being thrown out of Australia made him seem like he had no stability in his life. In 10 Things I Hate About You, Patrick is offered money to date Katherine so someone could take Bianca out for a night. In all the texts the parents of the girls make sure that no one is to have a relationship with Bianca until Katherine has a relationship as well. This is so that someone will eventually take Katherine off their hands to get to Bianca, otherwise Katherine would have never been wedded or dated. Gil Junger in 10 Things I Hate About You shows it is not socially acceptable for a man to treat a women like they did …show more content…
When Shakespeare sends Petruchio and Katherine off after their wedding, Katherine is miserable and soon deprived of food because it’s not good enough for her and he won’t let her sleep in his bed because he cares for her greatly. This process helps Petruchio break Katherine as she tires and becomes hungry she will cave in to him and all that he says, which according to him will create a better relationship for them in the future. David Richards in the ShakespeaRe-told Taming of the Shrew keeps the same idea of depriving Katherine of sleep and some food, although Petruchio then throws Katherine’s clothes in the pool reluctantly at their honeymoon retreat in …, to show her again how far he is willing to go in changing her attitude towards him. Lastly in 10 Things I Hate About You Patrick does not take the traditional method of Shakespeare but instead Gil Junger displays a more affectionate method of taming Katherine in which Patrick uses love to “tame the shrew”. The message the film is sending to teenage women isn’t very good, as it seems to say they should become a person without strong views and independence so they then will fit in the crowd. The directors had to stay true to the text but the motion of what’s being done to Katherine in today’s society would be considered mental and physical abuse. The variation in the way Petruchio tames Katherine differs

The Taming of the Shrew does not present major events such as Petruchio and Katherine's wedding or their travels home to Petruchio's estates. Characters fill in the missing events by relaying this information to each other through conversation. Before this happens, however, the audience members gain an element of mystery as well as humor as they try to imagine how the scene would have played out. Shakespeare intends for the audience members to find amusement as they imagine the scene in their own way. The absence of important events in the play brings humor and…

Subsequently, the inequalities between the genders are evident in the master plan Petruchio uses to change Katherine from a “bad girl” to a “good girl” because it depicts the extent to which patriarchal men would go to ensure their dominance over women. According to feminist theory, women who follow patriarchal standards are called “good girls” and they “are put on pedestals and idealized as pure, angelic creatures whose sense of self consists mainly or entirely of their usefulness to their husbands” (Tyson 87). Since Katherine does not follow this definition, Petruchio takes it upon himself to change her. In other words, as Critic Marianne L. Novy states, “The way [Petruchio] talks about society proves him independent of its actual judgments and ready to reverse its expectations…

Eric Minton’s thesis is accurate in his essay “Who is the Misogynist Monster: Petruchio, Shakespeare, or You?” because it mentions Taming of the Shrew as not being misogynist, and Petruchio and Kate having a stable relationship. Minton indicates that the play is not misogynist because of how Kate is able to be assertive and insulting. In Taming of the Shrew, Katherine says, “If I be waspish, best beware my sting” (II.i.208). Katherine is insulting Petruchio in this scene and shows how Shakespeare did not play her as a damsel in distress but as a strong, independent woman.…

In Shakespeare's work and Heath Ledger’s video, they of both works had the same tone because they both followed the same story line, so there were a lot of parts where Petrico would mess with Kate and she would do the same back, but in the movie, Patrick was more sweet and playful overall. This was depicted well in both works and it showed that the two were falling for one another. The filmmaker did really well at modernizing Taming of the Shrew into a work that is easily understood by the viewer. Without these modernized plays, Taming of the Shrew would be left behind and there would not have been such a strong meaning of true love in this work. The filmmaker made it possible for this story to be understood easily and also made it enjoyable to watch.…

Hortensio is asking around for someone to marry Kate, and Petruchio arrives and tells Hortensio that he is seeking a wife with a large dowry. The Taming of the Shrew: Petruchio states,”One rich enough to be Petruchio’s wife, / As wealth is burden of my wooing dance, / Be she as foul as was Florentius’ love, / As old as Sibyl and curst and shrewd / As Socrates’ Xanthippe, or a worse,” (54). This example depicts that Petruchio is going against the societal norms at this time because he wants to marry only for money, and he does not care how awful she is, how old she is or how she looks. Shakespeare wrote this not only to explain Petruchio’s reason for wanting to marry Kate, but he is also comparing Katherina to Sibyl, Xanthippe and Florentius’ love to express how much of a shrew she is.…
