Books mainly focus on character development whereas movies tend to focus on the casting of the character. The characters casted can make or break a film when they are shown on screen. Movie producers end up using famous people who have acting experience to act out the character in the book. For example, in the book, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, Percy is supposed to "look" like a 12 year old who doesn’t know what he is doing and would lose any fight he got into. Yet in the movie, Percy looks partially athletic, and is 16 years old. Casting decisions play an important role while making a movie; if the actors/actresses don't look like the characters described in the book, there will be critics. For example, if you look at Harry Potter, the books are very long, and as you may know, they are loved by many. Movie directors try to be very careful with their alterations and cuts, but this would usually be the time a problem occurs. Movies based on books always have missing pieces to make it shorter. Readers have no choice but to be disappointed when their favorite part isn’t included, or something they believe is a necessity to the book, gets left out. Time limitations in movies make it difficult to establish a sense of time going by. What we may interpret as a few weeks may actually be multiple months. Time passing is easier to achieve in a book because the story doesn’t need to be changed/altered. In a book, we witness a more natural advancement in character development and add to key events that take place, rather than jumping from one significant event into the next. Therefore, development in the book is more complex, deep and not rushed, which is considered more satisfying to readers.
There have been many attempts in making a film adaptation; some have ended in success, most in misery. Directors should not be allowed to take on a book and attempt to put it into movie form, because there is little hope for
