1. Compare and Contrast the differences and similarities between the setting in each text.

Both the texts ‘Once’ and The Book Thief’ are set during the same World War Two, but they are set in different locations. ‘Once’ takes place during World War Two, just like ‘The Book Thief’. We can tell this because both of the main characters, Felix from ‘Once’ and Liesel from ‘The Book Thief’ are hiding from the Nazis. We know that Felix is hiding from the Nazis when Barney makes comments like ‘The Nazi’s make the rules here’ (page 95). Liesel is also hiding from the Nazi’s by becoming a follower with her new family. Regardless of the similarities in which these texts are set, they differ in where place they are set in. ‘Once’ is set in Poland, whereas

We also know that ‘The Book Thief’ is set in Germany because at the start of the movie there is a subtitle stating “Germany, 1942”. From this, we know that ‘Once’ and ‘The Book Thief’ are both set during World War Two but they are located in different places.

2. Compare and Contrast the relationships that characters develop within the text.

Another similarity between ‘Once’ and ‘The Book Thief’ is the relationships that are developed between the characters. Both texts have close relationships built between characters, however, they are not the same types of relationships. In ‘Once’ the relationship developed between Felix and Zelda is a brother-sister relationship whereas the relationship developed between Felix and Barney is a father-son relationship. We can tell that the relationship developed between Felix and Zelda is a brother-sister relationship when Felix becomes over protective of Zelda. For instance, when Zelda is being taken by the Nazi’s while Felix and

In ‘Once’ the main character, Felix, is sent to an orphanage by his parents to protect him for the Nazi’s because he is Jewish. We know this because Felix states ‘They’re so kind these nuns. I’ll miss them when Mum and Dad take me home and I stop being Catholic and go back to being Jewish.’ (Page 4). His attitude changes towards the Nazi’s because at first he was praying to Hitler as well as a bunch or other people. For instance, ‘Thank you God, Jesus, Mary, the Pope and Adolf Hitler’ (Page 2), but little did he know that Hitler and the Nazi’s were killing innocent Jewish people. In the end, he came around to understand what was actually happening and when he did he became against the Nazi’s. Whereas in ‘The Book Thief’ Liesel is sent to live with Rosa and Hans, a childless couple who live in Bavaria, because her mother is communist, which means they were against Hitler and the Nazi’s. Liesel’s attitude changes towards Nazi’s because at the beginning it seems like she doesn’t really know what is going on but later on when they hide Max, who is Jewish, she starts to realise that Nazi’s are searching for Jews and she begins to dislike them. We can tell this because during the movie, Rudy and Liesel are yelling at the river ‘I hate Hitler’. These texts are similar in the way that both main characters start of going to new homes, they have confusion as to
