She goes through plenty of pain but shows courage throughs out the book. She has three brothers, Oscar and Lou: two joking, yet uncreative, middle brothers. And the more sophisticated, and younger brother Emil. Alexandra’s good friend since childhood, Carl, is also a key point in her emotional comfort. A good part of the story, much like Ethan Frome, takes place in a cold, devastating winter. Also like Ethan Frome is the love triangle between Emil, his old friend Marie, and her jealous, crazy husband Frank. Emil, much like Ethan Frome, makes bad decisions and in a way seduces Marie. But Marie is also very much at fault for her all of her foolish decisions. The plot of both stories definitely revolve around this, especially Ethan Frome. In Ethan Frome, the love triangle he has with his wife and Mattie is what the story is based on. He wrestles with himself plenty on what he should do with his situation. More times than once he decides to run away with Mattie, leave Zeena, and never look back. But his conscience and knowing Zeena needs him, much like his parents did, are holding him back. Unlike Ethan, Emil is more at rest with his decision. He knows he wants Marie, and doesn’t even want to recognise the little detail of how Marie is married. Marie was also just as bad as Emil in this situation, saying how she wanted Emil all the same. Marie may have had a bit more of a reason, saying how Frank was a horrible husband, but much like Ethan Frome, that’s no excuse. Unfortunately for Emil and Marie, their recklessness came at a cost, as Frank blinded shot them to death. Same could be said about Ethan and Mattie. Ethan knew he couldn’t run away with Mattie, but he didn’t want to live without her either. The only logical choice in their mind was to kill themselves in a sledding “accident”. In the two scenes, Emil and Marie being murdered, and Ethan and Mattie attempting suicide, was treated as a last hurrah in the books. Although Ethan and Mattie both survived, they had to live unhappy
