In both stories the characters are Jewish and friends of someone who is not Jewish. They also go to each others houses often and do things together. Mildred is an only child just like Ellen, and Yvette has a big family like Annemarie. They are hard to be separated from each other while together. One of the families has a business working unlike in the other story. The place they live in is in a tenement and a small region behind the shop. For example, in the story," Yvette lived on the top floor of a tenement...she lived with her parents in the three small rooms in the back of the candy store they owned"(PG. 164). Also, they are celebrating Passover as the Jewish holiday in this story. For example, in this story it says," Last Thursday the school had announced that free Passover lunches would be provided for the Jewish children during this week"(PG.163). Yvette is a Spanish girl. Throughout the story the events happen at a school and at Mildred's home. For example, in this story it says," Yvette ate the free lunch provided by the school" (PG.
