Lusus Naturae Short Story

Many times, through our journey in life, we become impacted by something that we’ve either seen, heard, or maybe read that left a memorable imprint in our minds. Sometimes this could even be a reality check or a life learned lesson for us to do better. If I were to decide which two stories that I believe for most had a memorable impact to their life, I would say “New Boy” by Roddy Doley and “Lusus Naturae” by Margaret Atwood. Both stories share a powerful meaning behind them and deal with similar conflicts that we should learn from..
In the story written by Roddy Doley called “New Boy,” Doley shares a very realistic story about a refuge’s first day in class, named Joseph. While reading his story, at first you begin to wonder, what a strange

“Lusus Naturae” is a story about a young girl who have contracted a disease, known as the Lucus Naturae. Lucus Naturae is Latin for “Freak of Nature.” From the beginning, you could already begin to feel sympathy for the little girl. Her family and everyone else around her treats her like some type of monster. Her own mother on page 225 questioned God saying, “why did God do this to us” and referred her daughter as a curse to the family. On the same page she explains how her grandmother tried to drown the demon at out her by plunging her head in a tub filled with water. And it’s sad to know that the young girl doesn’t blame them for treating her like an outcast. The young feels like she is a horrid to the family and blames herself for all their problems. One page 227, her mother with the approval of their daughter leaves her to fend for herself, so she could live with her other daughter. While looking for food in the forest, she comes a across couple on page 228 who resembles the starting stage of her characteristics. Finally, she feels happy to see someone just like her. But that doesn’t last too long when one of them becomes frightened and runs off to tell the town people, a riot begins, and the little girl is only left with the decision of either burning up in a house fire or jumping of a burning rooftop to die. You would think with how everyone treats her, that she would have so much hatred in her heart to everyone, but she continues to forgive and basically blames herself and feels like it is at their best interest of what they’re doing. While reading the story I’m pretty sure that this story has impacted many as well. Although someone does not look exactly like you, you should never treat them any different; treat others as you would want to be

It is not normal for one to seek for death if there is not an ulterior motive that had triggered them to do so. Margret Atwood’s short story “Lusus Naturae” is written in a first person point of view, in which the setting of the story is during the mid 1800s when modern medicine and faith clashed between one another. Atwood had developed the protagonist of the story as a young girl to a freak of nature.
