Metamorphosis has many blending images throughout the piece, which gives Metamorphosis it’s name. This can also be seen in Day and Night when the birds are morphing together. Escher has the birds morph from the landscape surrounding the town to become the birds in the sky, this image can be linked back to conformity. The birds blending together represent the pressure of society influencing people into conforming to social normality. Farther out in the carving there are a few birds splitting away from the group to symbolize the individuals trying to break free from conformity. In Metamorphosis the lone scarecrow represents every individual on their own, we then see it conforming and “morphing” into what society wants it to be. Which in the wood carving is the city. Another image that stands out to me is how both pieces have simple and very precise smaller images within them. Day and Night seems like a basic art piece until you look and see the intricate town and all the detailing that goes on in the boat and landscape. Escher's Metamorphosis starts as a simple image then morphs into a precise carving, with very fine details.
Not only does Escher create many complicated works but they all have meaning to them. One main idea that is repeated throughout Day and Night and Metamorphosis is that little occurrences of change may not seem important but can have a big impact in the long term. Metamorphosis II has many examples of this, there is one image that starts out at the beginning of the metamorphosis and it changes into multiple different ideas throughout the piece. The simple black and white words change into many other images which show how the little things can have a big effect on your life. Conformity and individuality also are related to change. Either conforming or becoming an individual can change your life, whether you realize it, just like in the art. Everything being connected is another idea brought up in both pieces. Day and Night has the birds flying together and morphing with the land, while the birds morphing into the land is physical it also has a deeper meaning. This shows how the the birds life cycle will all always be connected to the ground. Another example is throughout the entire piece of Metamorphosis III all the images are being connected by Escher’s
