Media violence and aggression –
Can you compare/contrast if one causes the other?
Violence is present in various media formats such as television, music and video game playing. I believe that media violence does contribute to aggression especially if trait aggression and trait hostility are present; media violence can in fact enhance aggression p. (136). As Krahé, (2013) discusses “individuals high on trait hostility, hostile feelings are chronically accessible” and “by contrast, people who are lower on trait hostility are induced by the prime to activate aggression related affective states.” I understand this to be that the more violence a person is exposed to “the more likely it is to promote aggressive behavior” according to (Barbara Krahé 2013,

Moreover, there are various ways in which violence is presented to people that affects the intensity of violence and aggression.
For example, a study was done that made the controls to a game in the shape of a real gun and that sparked an increase in excitement to the game as compared to the same game with no gun as the controller, which according to Krahé, (2013) “suggest that the more realistically violence is presented in video games, the more likely it is to promote aggressive behavior (Barbara Krahé 2013, p. 138).
There seems to be a link for certain that confirms violence does cause aggression because it gets in the mind cognitively working on the individual and pointing them in that direction. Also, as stated by Krahé, (2013) “not only do aggressive media contents prime aggressive cognitions, but also the priming of aggressive thoughts then leads to a preference for violent media contents (Barbara Krahé 2013, p.
