Although written during very different time periods, Macbeth and the Paris Architect portrays a parallel, from beginning, middle to end, that ultimately utilizes similar thematic elements to drive the plot along.

In Macbeth, there are a variety characters that cause complications to Macbeth, but the one true archenemy of Macbeth is Macduff who ultimately caused the downfall of Macbeth. Readers can foresee that Macduff will be problematic to Macbeth when he first discovers Duncan’s dead body. Macduff is the one who is skeptical of Macbeth, which is why Macbeth is irritated and orders to slaughter his family. In The Paris Architect, Lucien’s architectural achievements are hindered in a similar manner to Macbeth, and it is Alain, who Lucien hired to help with architectural designs. First, readers are known that Alain is closely associated with the Gestapo because of the fact that he is raised by his uncle, who is a Gestapo officer. Later in the book, Alain is the first one who gets a grasp at what Lucien is doing. He finds the sketches of a hiding place that Lucien is designing and there is a gush of unconformity. Both Macduff and Alain is an element for foreshadowing the protagonist’s fate, and it is also what moves the plot along. However, in the end, Shakespeare and Belfoure decided to veer off the story into two opposite direction: One is a happy ending and the other, not so much.
