A Comparison of Linux & Windows

Abstract
There are a number of operating systems available for personal use as well as small and large businesses. Probably the two most popular are Linux and Windows. In order to determine what operating system best suits your needs, it’s important to know some background on Linux and Windows. Some important factors to consider in the selection of an operating system are what are some of the things that make Linux and Windows appealing and what are some of their drawbacks. In today’s economic conditions, it’s vital for companies to try and keep costs down. This paper will also look at the cost of each operating system. As Linux progressed, there were those that wanted to see how and if Linux could perform in a multiple computing environment. Using clustering technology, many machines were hooked together in parallel and turning them into a kind of supercomputer—it worked. This makeshift supercomputer was able to perform 19 billion calculations per second at a fraction of the cost of a real supercomputer. The Linux operating system has proved to be capable of handling large tasks while providing the flexibility to adapt to new hardware quickly and easily. As a testament to Linux’s flexibility, it only took a couple weeks after the Intel Xeon Microprocessor was released for someone to adjust the Linux kernel so the operating system was able to run on the new technology. (Asprey & Seruzzi, 2008) The Linux operating system also has many capabilities, one of which is networking. According to Linux: The Complete Reference Account, “As a norm, Linux distributions include fast, efficient, and stable Internet servers” to include web, proxy, news, print, and mail servers, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), domain name service (DNS), along with C++ compiler/debugger program development utilities. “In other words, Linux has everything you need to set up, support, and maintain a fully functional network” (Asprey & Seruzzi, 2008 pg.3) As some programs are memory hogs, Linux is not.
