Many parents and teachers believe the novel Of Mice and Men should be banned in all schools. In fact a vast variety of profanity and inappropriate phrases can be found in the novel. Racism and violence also swarm the characters in the book, and can affect the reader too. On the other hand the American dream is also poorly represented in the book. This book should be banned throughout schools because of the harsh language used, the thought of racism and violence, and the teaching of a dream being taken away.

Among some of these words are “God Damn” and “Bastard”, an example of this thought is shown in an article by Richard Lea which shows how Idaho parents want the book banned from their children's school for the use of profanity. A quote from this website states “After counting more than 100 “profanities”, she expressed her shock to the Spokesman Review that “teachers actually had the audacity to have students read these profanities out loud in class”. This quote is a good representation of the parents thoughts on the book, clearly this parent along with many more does not want this book to be taught, and feel offended when their children have to read the profane words out loud. Also it is stated that these parents would rather their children to read them voluntarily or small group only, letting their children make the decision instead of forcefully being subjected to read it. A large amount of profanity can be found in this novel which shows how the author wanted it to be made for adults only. The reading of profanity and inappropriate phrases can cause the reader to begin repeating these words and phrases, therefore resulting in profanity being used by kids.
