Objectivism In Ayn Rand's Anthem

Prompt #1 - Point of View In the novel, Anthem, the author wrote in first person major which provided many merits in the development of the novel. Using the diary as a medium helped develop an understanding of how Equality 7-2521’s life was like and how he changed and grew throughout the novel. At first, Equality 7-2521 did not feel proud of what he was doing until the end of the novel where he found pride in his individualism. Having the novel written in diary form gave the reader a better understanding of what Equality 7-2521 thought of and how he felt towards his “brothers” and the way everyone lived. Diary form reflected Equality 7-2521’s individuality as he had the free decision to write whatever he wanted just as he chose the decisions that eventually lead to his escape. At first, Equality 7-2521 would go into a hidden tunnel to write in his diary. One of which is the Uncharted Forest. The Uncharted Forest illustrates the “anthem” or uplifting of objectivism in many different ways. When Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000 was in the Uncharted Forest, it brought up the idea that people have a sense of sovereignty to strive for their own self-interests. “If it be death, we shall die with you. You are damned, and we wish to share your damnation” (Rand 49). This quote spoken by Liberty 5-3000 helps illustrate the idea of objectivism. Liberty 5-3000 is using the freedom she has in the Uncharted Forest to be able to express her love and commitment to Equality 7-2521. In addition, Liberty 5-3000 is expressing how she wants to lead her life through her rational self-interests to benefit towards her own pursuit of happiness.
