The American dream has been the ideal goal, for years. Some see that they have achieved their dream, while there are others who are still out searching for what the American dream is all about and there are the ones who gave up on finding the dream. The American dream is known for its qualities which are liberty, equality and the pursuit of happiness. These qualities are identified in both Hughes and Tan 's works of literature, in both pieces of literature "Theme for English B" and "Two Kinds" portray the America dream from the eyes of an outsider. "Two Kinds from The Joy Luck Club" by Amy Tan is a story about a mother, who is determined to make her daughter a prodigy, the mother of the speaker in this story is a believer in the American dream "My Mother Believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America" (Tan 294) the mother believed in dreams coming true in America, and like any loving mother she wanted her daughter to have the best life, and to be the best person she could be. Throughout the story the mother of the speaker pushes her into pursuing different talents, but as time goes by the need to be perfect fades form the speakers mind. She finds that she needs to be herself and to stop living out her mother dreams "I won 't let her change me, I promised myself. I won 't be what I 'm not" (Tan 296) here the speaker finds part of her identity, to be herself, and not what her mother wants her to be. As foreigners who settle down in America might fear of losing tradition and culture, the fear of forgetting where they come from sets fear in their minds, for some those fears come true, they adapt to the culture around them , and become Americanized , and for others they adjust to their surroundings while keeping their culture alive in their daily lives.
