Hand, foot and mouth disease starts off with a mild fever, lethargy, soar throat, difficulty swallowing and lose of appetite. One to two days after initial symptoms, oral and skin lesions appear; usually the oral lesions appear first. They are most commonly found on the buccal mucosa and palate but can also be found on the tongue, lips and gingival tissue. The lesions look similar to ulcers with a greyish/white base and red halo, they are usually 2-10mm in diameter. The lesions are similar to those of herpes, but are in a more uniform order and are slightly smaller. Next is the skin rash, it can be found on the palms of the hands and feet, buttocks, knees and elbows and the lesions are usually 3-7mm. The rash can sometimes be mistaken for chicken
