These branches are individually in charge of very similar possessions compared to the description George Orwell gave referring to Big Brother. The American Government’s branches consist of the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches; also the American citizens, being the most important. The Legislative branch is one of the three divisions of the United States Government, better known as Congress, that works in conjointment with the other branches. Congress is divided into two separate houses, one being the Senate and the other the House of Representatives; their responsibilities include: passing laws, originating spending bills, impeaching officials and approving treaties. Next, the Executive Branch is known as the President of the United States, who runs the daily business of the government. The President’s duties and responsibilities are as follows: carrying out federal laws and recommending new ones, directing and managing national defense and foreign policy, and performing ceremonial duties. The Executive Branch’s powers include vetoing laws, being the commander and chief of the Armed Forces, and directing the government. Following the Executive Branch is also the Judicial Branch, which is lead by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court’s powers include interpreting and executing the law in the name of the state, and providing a mechanism for the resolution of disputes. As specified in the novel,“Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard” (Orwell, page 5). This brings one image and many concerns to mind. The image, a room with a giant television screen containing a camera and a recorder in order to detect and listen to Winston’s actions and speech, in case he decides to break the law. The concerns are more-so apprehensions; what if the government is actually able to spy and overhear what every citizen is doing right
