How Does Investigation Lead to Discovery?
Most people don’t think of exploring the moon when talking about Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery. Sure, they both are explorations, but one was on Earth, and the other was on the moon. But they are both capable of answering the question: How does investigation lead to discovery? Investigating, or searching, studying, testing, questioning, experimenting, and finding every possible answer is key to finding new things, but how? The Captain’s Dog (TCD) and Flying to the Moon: An Astronaut’s Story (FTTM) will help with that. The Captain’s Dog is about Seaman, the dog who went on the famed expedition of the Corps of Discovery. Before they could hop on a spaceship and head for the moon, they had to go through a mental and physical training. Collins discovers that flying a spaceship is more than just moving the steering wheel around and keeping your foot on the pedal, and is even more complicated than even flying a fast jet. After going through hours of training he was finally ready, so he walked in the ship, sat in his designated seat and set off preparing to fly to the moon. As he was flying away from earth faster than the speed of sound, he noticed that, from a distance, the Earth followed the same lunar pattern as it got bigger and bigger until it was full, and then it began to shrink down to a sliver, then to a new moon, following the exact same time as the lunar cycle. This was the first discovery he made on his trip to the moon. The second happened as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon when they found that moondust is slippery and their craft slid quite a few feet before coming to a stop. When Armstrong and Aldrin went to measure the temperature, the original guesses were way off when in sunlight the temperature was a few hundred degrees but in shadow it was almost negative 300 degrees, making their predictions about temperature off by almost 100 in each direction. When they returned home with their moon rocks and their moon dust they collected, they got to examine all of their possessions and found out and interesting fact: moondust is really sharp. They realized that this could have ripped through their space suits and killed them, but they couldn’t worry about that anymore.
