There are two writers that have really sparked and changed the crime fiction genre and in my opinion there are few that have really impacted media and production films as much as Edgar Allen Poe and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Edgar Allen Poe was really the first major contributor to the genre and outside of this course, he was one of the only crime fiction writers that my school exposed me to. In this writing I will explore Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s writing style as well as Edgar Allen Poe’s writing style and look into how these two writers are similar and how it has affected the genre. The largest similarity that I have picked up on between Edgar Allen Poe and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the way that their characters solve problems through deductive reasoning. But how does this trait fit into the genre and each author’s style of writing? In order to show how Conan Doyle writes in a deductive and critical way here is a quote from “A Scandal in Bohemia”:

You can definitely see the resemblance of Poe’s writing style in Conan Doyle’s work. Take the two examples provided above, you can see that the writing style is very similar, it’s analytical and coherent yet takes a decent amount of thought for the reader to truly understand what’s going on in the story. According to a transcript of Arthur Conan Doyle he said, “Edgar Allan Poe’s splendid stories, which were only three in number, are a mode for all time” (“Conan Doyle Speaking”). The main difference between the Poe and Conan Doyle in this specific case is that Poe went through a very lengthy passage while explaining the deposition of the witnesses, on the other hand Conan Doyle’s writing can be faster paced at
