The Key Critical Term I choose is gesture and the two research topics are courtesy in Atlanta and Georgia RenFest. I think they both have a strong connection to the term gesture.

From the essay by Carol Robinson, gestures are socially codified movements of body parts or vocalized sounds that, even in a formal setting, can send a uniquely personal message. Also, gestures can have different meanings in different time which provide us with a unique angle to observe and research into certain historical period such as medieval time or antebellum Atlanta. Manners and etiquettes of the South can be traced back to the first immigrants of America. Some of these courtesy or manners were verbal. However, a large part of them were expressed by body language and that how gesture is connected to Atlanta historically. Thus, the southern manners reflect the relationship with England and African that was held by early immigrants. There are terms such as Southern hospitality and Southern Belle to describe such manners and etiquettes. Many of these manners were shown by the gestures of people at the time. Some of these manners have survived and evolved along the way and helps shape the social and cultural life in southern United States today. There are also schools or training programs in Atlanta nowadays that would teach people about such manners. In one episode of Conan Show, Conan attended the Southern Charm school in Atlanta and learned about things like handshake, eating manners and greeting methods. It is interesting that although many of the gestures which held meanings historically have lost their meanings while some remains rather constant and unchanged. I think by researching more in to historical gestures, manners and customs of certain historical time can be more accessible to us.

I have always been very interested in gesture and I do believe that one’s body languages not only speak his or her heart but also carry some deep social and cultural meanings that other forms of media cannot convey. Since the meanings of gestures are ever evolving, the past and the present are coexisting in one gesture. It would be fascinating to look into this evolution process in the context of modern activities such as Georgia Renaissance Fair and the courtesy in

The blessing that accompanies the gesture, “Live long and prosper”, was based on a Jewish consecration.…

Etiquette provided precise daily rules regarding times, proper dress and behavior, and places. Therefore, proper etiquette was associated with the higher classes and those who sought to copy their example and behavior (Palmer 226). For instance, royal courts were the most natural locations of etiquette because the court itself focused on monarchs around whom “nice” behavior spread. Additionally, in the Anglo-Saxon society, the queen was mindful of etiquette. One such example occurred when she carried a goblet around in an order of precedence(“Etiquette.”, Britannica High School).…
