Christmas in the middle ages and the UK is on the same day the 25th of December. In the middle ages they had a lot more holidays and Christmas lasted more than 2-3 days. The 12 days of Christmas is from Christmas which originated from the middle ages. In the 12 days of medieval Christmas their was serval holidays, St Stephen's day was on the 26th of December, holy innocents on the 28th of December and Ephaniny and the feast of St Nicholas was on the 6 of December which was linked to gift giving. Christmas was preceded by a month of fasting in the season of advent. Advent was a time at Christmas where you could only do certain things: you had to fast for three days a week, these were also known as Ember days (Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) you were only allowed to eat one meal a day which was either fish or vegetables. …show more content…
Christians had to try not to eat meat, dairy products, wine, fat and ale, but you could eat eggs. The rich would stock up on seafood such as, sturgeon, eels and oysters. They also couldn't do anything that is a guilty pleasure like, gambling and unnecessary traveling. Another reason they did this also because it helped their meat supplies for winter and then at Christmas time they could look forward to a big feast. In the UK today, the day before Christmas is Christmas eve, like the middle-ages Christmas is still on the same day the 25th of December followed by boxing day on the 26th of December. In the UK the only advent they have is an advent calendar. It can be filled with toys, chocolate or you can make your own. You start opening up the calendar on the 1st of December and it finishes on the 25th of December. The advent calendar is mostly for children but it can be used for anyone. We don’t fast at Christmas for the same reason, although you
