Cuckoo's Nest As A Christ Figure Analysis

A Christ Figure can be used to represent Jesus Christ throughout a piece of literature. This literary device will show how a character will sacrifice himself for the improvement of the people around him. In the novels A Separate Peace, One Flew Over the Cuckoo 's Nest, and the film Cool Hand Luke, characters are represented as Christ Figures. A Christ Figure shows their followers an alternate approach to an idea or a situation. A Separate Peace is about Finny, a boy who alters the lives of those around him by creating Blitzball, a game that has no winner in the end, and The Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. Blitzball does not have a winner because Finny believes that there are no losers in a game, and everyone wins. Finny always …show more content…
They can also show an image of crucifixion, which is an image that imitates Christ on the cross. In A Separate Peace, Finny has a broken leg that represents a wound, which reflects a Christ Symbol. The nails in the tree Finny fell off of and broke his leg is an image of crucifixion, because the nails in the tree represent the nails in the cross. McMurphy has many wounds in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, such as the results after his electroshock therapy, and his lobotomy. Both these procedures altered McMurphy’s head, both physically and mentally. During McMurphy’s electroshock therapy, McMurphy asks the technician, “do I get a crown of thorns?” (283) The crown of thorns represent what Christ received, especially because it leaves wounds on the head. Also, the electroshock therapy table is in the shape of a cross, which is another direct example of an image of crucifixion. In Cool Hand Luke, after Luke eats the fifty eggs his body is left over full, which can be taken as a wound. When Luke lays down after eating them, he lays his arms out which can look like an image of a cross. Also, at the end of the film when the image zooms out, two roads cross, and form an image that can be looked at like a cross. All three of these characters have wounds and show images of Christ’s Crucifixion, which symbolizes a Christ

In “Film as Art and Psychology: Cool Hand Luke as Exemplar," Frank Barron employs a metaphorical comparison between religion and movies to claim that Cool Hand Luke is “about the Passion and Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ” (102). He substantiates his claim with in-depth mise-en- scène analysis, which does make Barron’s argument convincing, but to a certain extent. Barron highlights how Lucas Jackson’s figure movement and expressions symbolize that of Jesus Christ. For example, when he says “Luke is [seen] repeatedly stretching his arms akimbo, spread-eagled so that his body is like a cross” (102) after doing the unthinkable, eating fifty eggs. I do agree with Barron that Luke’s actions signify that of Christ; however the author focuses…

In literature, many authors, often unknowingly, write in characters known as 'Christ figures'. To be a Christ figure, a character must possess Christ-like traits such as loving kindness, forgiveness, humility, healing, or sacrifice. They also have to face circumstances similar to what Jesus faced. From being tempted to being crucified, Christ figures endure many hardships and often act as a savior to others in the story. Billy Bud acts as the Christ figure in Billy Bud because he shows great innocence and humility as well as endures hardships and even death in a humble, Christ like way.…

Society is a machine, supposed to function without a hitch, everybody acting and fulfilling their certain parts, and upholding the ceaseless standards that it entails. The question that remains is what is to become of those who find themselves, deemed unable to fit into societies’ functions and workings. Are they to be controlled, suppressed, or reformed to serve a better purpose in the “machine” of society, or are they supposed to be eliminated or silenced. These are some of the main topics broached in Ken Kesey’s counterculture novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which comments on the normalizing tendencies and reformist nature of society through the symbol of machinery.…

Perhaps the best example that can be given to prove Simon is a Christ-figure is through his actions seen in the novel. Some of Simon’s smallest and simplest actions add up and relate to simple actions done by Jesus. It is known that Jesus was always very good with children. There are many pictures of him being surrounded by children and helping them. When Simon walks pass the little ones struggling to reach for berries, he does not even think twice before stopping and helping them gather food for the others: “Simon found for them the fruit they could not reached . . .…

The Cross Kesey’s usage of the cross in the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest resembles the classical Roman definition of the cross as a symbol of humiliating execution, not in the literal sense of killing, but in that both the Romans and Kesey recognize the cross as a tool for establishing orthodoxy and achieving conformity. Kesey’s comparison of the electroshock table to the cross demonstrates the cross as not a form of redemption, but of annihilating dissents to achieve total control. When Harding describes the electroshock therapy, he claims that “You are strapped to a table, shaped, ironically, like a cross … Zap! … (and) turn into a mindless organism …” (65).…

Published in 1962, “One flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest” by Ken Kesey holds a story of a patient in a mental institution of Oregon. Wanting to become a registered nurse one day, I have chosen to research “One flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest” because it presents a terrible example of a nurse named Ratched. The novel was popular enough to spread the reality that a mentally ill patient faces in a sanatorium. “The book 's publication contributed to a backlash against the entire psychiatric treatment system in the US in the 1960s.” (Pittman qtd.…
