“Chiefs on three, one….two...three...CHIEFS!” Chiefs are the mascot of Caldwell and West Caldwell’s amazing sports teams. Caldwell and West Caldwell are located in Essex County, New Jersey. The Caldwells settled in the early 18th century by pioneers who moved westward from Newark or through the Passaic Valley. West Caldwell and Caldwell have pools open all summer for people to hang out. Caldwell and West Caldwell both have governments that are open to new ideas, they use money the money they collect wisely towards programs like the public schools and recreation programs, and take pride in the recreation and sports. We have endless parks, pools, and fun programs and camps for the youth of our town.

Both towns collect taxes on property, sales, businesses and income to collect money to give towards the recreation programs and schools. State and city governments around the country “depend on [income taxes] as their main source of revenue” (Encyclopedia of American Government and Civics). From this, we can tell that many governments around the country depend on collecting income taxes, which are taxes on the money people earn. Caldwell and West Caldwell governments collect money from the citizens in what they earn while they work. They can also collect taxes on sales and property, and businesses that are government owned. With the money they earn from these procedures, both towns spend their money on making the recreation programs better and our public schools as well. One of the things that Caldwell and West Caldwell are most proud of is the recreation programs since “the department [of recreation] promotes these recreational opportunities in the most effective, efficient and economical manner” (West Caldwell Recreation Policies & Procedures). The department of recreation is something that is made possible by the town governments. The West Caldwell website states, “West Caldwell is especially proud of its Recreation Program which is considered one of the finest and most comprehensive in New Jersey.” The Caldwell-West Caldwell Recreation Program is very organized and successful with sports and extracurricular activities. The borough of Caldwell-West Caldwell has two town pools where town residents, Roseland, and Essex Fells residents can swim and have fun in the summer. The two town pools- Cedar St. Pool and Westville Pool, both include diving boards, basketball/volleyball courts, playgrounds, snack bars, and chairs with umbrellas located all around the pool areas. There are baby pools and very shallow areas where toddlers and children can swim, and areas for diving. Both pools are open 7 days a week, and include adult swimming and lap swimming for adults to swim for 20 minutes without the disruption of children. Another activity for children during the summer is Caldwell-West Caldwell summer camps. There are four recreational camps that are located across town in Francisco Park, Westville Pool, Memorial Park, and Jefferson School. The camps include exciting field trips, pool days, visits, and the final carnival at the end of the summer.
