Broken dreams of, of mice and men
The definition of dream is “Dreams are a succession of images, ideas, emotions and sensations that occur, usually involuntarily in the mind”. Dreams are a powerful thing and they don’t come easy. In of Mice of Men a novella about two men’s travels through Salinas Valley, Lennie and George two opposites want to achieve their dreams. The events and people they experience in the space of one weekend, will shape their future forever. Through the characters, George, Curley’s Wife and Crooks, Steinbeck proves that there is always something stopping one from achieving ones dream.

It is evident from the text that the things George likes are keeping him from achieving his dreams and moving forward in life. When Crooks, Lennie and Candy are speaking about their dream of owning their own land

When Lennie walks into Crooks room and Crooks bitterly says, “I aint wanted in the bunk house and you aint wanted in my room”, Lennie replied “why aint you wanted” Crooks snaps “Cause I’m black, they play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black (68)”. Crooks clearly states no one likes him and he’s not wanted because of his skin colour, that is discrimination, the men are racist towards Crooks and that’s stopping him from being equal and being free and achieving his dream. But it’s not just the men in the bunk house that are racist. When Crooks talks about his childhood he says. “We were one of the only coloured family for miles around and now I’m the only coloured man on this ranch, if I say something it’s only a Negro saying it (70)” this shows the discrimination and racism that Crooks faces. He has been made to feel like an outcast because he is a negro, that his opinion is not valued because of his skin colour and it is stopping him from being fee and equal because he can’t express his opinions and the white people

Crooks tells Lennie about the segregation he faced growing up by telling him, “The white kids [would] come to play at our place, an’ sometimes I went to play with them . . . My ol’ man didn’t like that . . .’” (70), which shows that even Crooks’s own father isolated him from other people because of meaningless physical characteristics. This kind of thinking followed him into his adult life by him being discriminated against and segregated from other people because of his skin color. The discrimination and segregation that Crooks faces definitely contributes to his…

The novel describes Crooks as an unliked black man that works and lives in the stables. Crooks is an average stereotyped African American during this time, being an uneducated, good for nothing scum that no one likes, and it is easy for others to show disrespect and lash out anger upon. Crooks in this case, doesn’t follow all of the stereotypes, because he is a man who wants to go against what society says in this stereotype and tries to be hardworking and educated. For the purpose of this essay, Crooks will still be used as an example. Crooks follows the stereotype because he works on the ranch for little to nothing and isn’t treated well, such as when George and Lennie were late and Candy said that the “‘boss gives him hell when he’s mad’”, when they weren’t on time, for instance (20).…

We all have dreams but they don’t always come true “Of Mice and Men” is a story where this is partly true because not only does one dream not come true none of them do. The story “Of Mice and Men is a story where no dreams come true. Just a few examples of peoples whose dream didn’t come true Candy, Curley, Curley's Wife, George, and Lennie. I believe that Steinbeck was trying to show what the everyday life of a man and women was like during the during the depression and how no dreams ever came true, although he may have spruced up the story to make it more intriguing to the reader he also shows what the life of an average person was like during the depression. In my essay, I'm going to go deeper it to George, Lennie, and Curley’s Wife's…

OMAM: American Dream Do you ever feel like you're not really living life, but going by the mechanics of life, then find yourself dreaming of a different life. John Steinbeck focuses on the American Dream through a few key characters because he’s trying to portray how close you can get when you work for the little bit of heaven in life when the one you're living may be hell. So, in other sense, he’s trying to create this world where everyone works hard, dreams on, and lives by, like we still do today. Many want more out of life, but do nothing to change.…

Shown in the characterisation throughout the story, racism is displayed through the stable buck, Crooks. Crooks is segregated due to his skin colour, which makes him feel dejected since he is not welcome anywhere near the other men on the ranch. The result of the way the white people have treated him, has led Crooks to feel hostile and defensive towards them. For instance, when Lennie wanted to come into the barn where Crooks ' room was, Crooks was not very comfortable and welcoming with Lennie being around and told him how "They play cards in there, but I can 't play because I am black.
