The Threshold is a point in the hero’s journey when the initiate must go from their well known comfort zone to the unknown darkness. Beowulf faces his Threshold on the first night he stays in Herot, preparing to fight the monster Grendel. Katniss was forced into her threshold when she was unwillingly placed into a fighting arena to battle with 23 other contestants. The Threshold also involves the people, more specifically known as “Guardians”, that appear throughout the journey to help the heros. Both characters, Katniss and Beowulf, have mentors that accompany them on their quest. King Hrothgar gives Beowulf words of encouragement before battling the monster Grendel, as well as help from his brave knights who stand by him during the fight. Atonement is reached with Beowulf when the monsters are defeated and Herot is safe after twelve years. For this achievement, Beowulf gains the title as leader as his people, the Geats.
