Edgar Allen Poe hated and lost many people in his live including his wife, mother, foster mother, and his foster father. These loses impacted Poe greatly and can be seen in his writing. Poe’s work always includes disease, death, isolation, and the punishment of the rich. The settings in Poe’s work are similar because they are secluded. In Poe’s story “The Cask of Amontillado” the setting is set in the narrator’s family catacombs where his ancestors are buried. The catacombs are secluded and away from any other people. “And stood together upon the damp ground of the catacombs of the Montressors.” In Poe’s story “The Fall of the House of Usher” the setting is set in the old family house of the Ushers. In “The Cask of Amontillado” the narrator lures his enemy in to his family’s catacombs promising that he has bought a cask of Amontillado and wishes him to ensure its authenticity. The narrator then chains the enemy in a small room and uses bricks to finish the door way and covers it with his ancestors remains. “Shrill screams bursting suddenly rom the chained form. In Poe’s story “The Fall of the House of Usher” the narrator is visiting his old mentally and physically sick childhood friend Roderick. Roderick askes the narrator to help him to carry his recently deceased sister in to his catacombs. The narrator complies and helps him carry the body into the catacombs. Later in the story the narrator and Roderick hear muffled screams and scraping and in the end Roderick’s sister escapes from the catacombs covered in blood and dies with Roderick simultaneously. In Poe’s story “Masque of the Red Death” the narrator let all of his subjects except the rich fall to the Red Death.
