Comparison Of Abandoned Farmhouse And Nothing Gold Can Stay

Improved Essays
In the poems, Nothing Gold Can Stay and Abandoned Farmhouse, there are many similarities and differences. Some similarities are by, theme, mood , and imagery. Some differences are, figurative language, character, and rhyme scheme.

An example from both of the poems that are evidence to back up my thoughts ,that they are similar in theme is, in Nothing Gold Can Stay, the poem is telling you about change and how nothing can stay perfect forever. Lines that help me think that are, “Natures first green is gold. Her hardest hue to hold.” Those two lines mean that when you first get something it is perfect like gold, but when time goes by it is hard to hold on to. Another line that helped me back up my thought is on the last

A line from the poem that helps support my thought is when it says, “ Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour.” Those mean that everything is perfect and fun, until time goes by and it isn’t how it was before. It’s really sad when you think about it, like when you are playing with your new puppy, and then a few years later it can’t run around and play like it did. Another line that is an example of why the mood is sad, is when it says , “Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief.” When you read those lines it makes you think about nature and how leaves fall from trees . Well it is sad when you see a plant dying or falling apart, and it is sad when a season changes, for example, when you are having the best summer ever and then one day you hear your mom tell you that school starts the next day, that makes you sad . In Abandoned Farmhouse the lines that make the poem have a sad mood are, in all of the lines it talks about how the house is a mess and the place is just ruined. That would make me feel sad if my house was ruined. Also in the last paragraph when it tells you about how the toys were hanging and laying around, it is sad because if the child didn’t have toys when they left , it would make me feel sad that he or she didn’t have anyone or anything to play

A close study of the technique Drew Haden Taylor, the central character of “Pretty Like a White Boy”, and Joe, the central character of “Legless Joe Versus Black Robe”, respond to their encounters with problems they face almost everyday and use humor to reduce the pain their problems is causing them. Though the authors of “Pretty Like a White Boy” as well as “Legless Joe Versus Black Robe” have creative ways of crafting their work, these two writers expressed their similarities of humor usage in their characters, style and plot between their stories. Why is humour usage in novels important? Firstly, Humor usage is effective in writing because it helps shape reader’s understanding of the reading. The similarities aren’t clear to see in the short stories, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? and A Good Man is Hard to Find”, but if you look closely you can see multiple; one being that the main characters are both female, selfish, self-absorbed and conceited. This selfishness is shown by the grandmother; in A Good Man is Hard to Find, when she takes her cat on vacation, callously saying “because he would miss her too much and she was afraid he might brush against one of the gas burners and accidentally asphyxiate himself” (O’Connor 1097) cats are independent animals and its doubtful the cat would even know she was gone, but the reality is is that would miss the cat. Comparative to the grandmother, Connie in “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” demonstrates her selfishness by snubbing her families’ barbeque “rolling her eyes to let her mother know just what she thought of it” (Oates 2129).…

In the two poems Miniver Cheevy and Richard Coy there are many similarities as well as differences. Some of the main things that jump out at me is how unhappy they both are I believe they are both similar in this respect, also how at one point they seemed happy. One of the main difference is that one has everything he wants in life and more, while the other one can only dream of great things. Another main difference is that one is unhappy enough to end his life while the other one while unhappy still continues to live in his misery. While both of these poems have stark differences they have great similarities also.…

Milkweed, “Until Then I Had Only Read About These Things in Books,” and “The Guard” are all about children and adults experiencing life during the Holocaust. In these excerpts and poems the narrator views the Nazis in similar but different ways. There were many similarities and differences between these three excerpts. One similarity is that the poem, “The Guard” and the excerpt, “Until Then I Had Only Read About These Things in Books” they both show that the characters are scared. From the excerpt, “Until Then I Had Only Read About These Things in Books” it states, “We couldn’t make a sound, and all we would hear was the sound of people searching, their footsteps, their knocking on the walls.”…

Most of the story it’s hard to tell if the author is being serious or not, and it’s clear he’s not - rather he tries to involve humor in his statement. The setting also contributes to the mood, which further adds to the overall theme. The empty, cold house accentuates their gloomy minds, with no fruitful thought or want of their own. Humans can no longer express themselves, and their personal thoughts and feelings. That can be seen when Hazel sees her son die to TV right in front of her, but she can only cry for a few seconds before the thought has materialized from her mind, which builds the defeated, dull mood.…

His previous “cold reprieve” has been warmed by the leaves in nature that “burn red” before dying. The short but graceful life of the leaf is a metaphor for what life should be - beautiful regardless of the time given. This juxtaposition of life as a “cold reprieve” changing into the image of a leaf burning “red” shows how the voice’s view on life is changing throughout the poem by the echo’s prompting. Realizing that nature is stunning in its death, he now understands that life is a wonderful journey leading up to death that should be cherished in all of its beauty.…

Which short story would be best for teaching about certain literary devises: The Interlopers or The Story of an Hour? This is the question I will be answering by comparing and contrasting them. One of the two stories will be best for two of the objectives and the other for the last. The literary devises I will be comparing and contrasting in the two stories are irony, foreshadowing, and suspense. The Interlopers has a fair sense of irony, foreshadowing and suspense. It has many examples of quirk of fate.…

The third and fourth lines of this poem are also metaphors. In nature everything eventually dies and is quite remembered when it is young and beautiful, but as time goes by the leaves die and become brittle and then new leaves are reborn. The entirety of this poem is about life and death cycle of humans. In this poem he uses a lot of metaphors just like “The Road not Taken”, however, he also uses quite a bit of alliteration in this one. The person speaking…
