During the Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo stylistic periods, there was an ever growing and evolving body of scientific knowledge. This expansion of knowledge not only impacted the scientific community, but also the artistic community. It’s also important to note that, as we learned in the readings this unit, many scientists and philosophers possessed a wide variety of talents, and were also artists. Because of this, there was a great deal of crossover between science and art. We can see this crossover in each of the artistic periods, respectively.
First we’ll take a look at a specific example from the Renaissance period. One such artist was Leonardo da Vinci, who, in addition to being an incredible artist, was also renowned for his work as a scientist, mathematician, and inventor, among other talents. The crossover of science into his art is undeniable, as can be seen in works such as those that resulted from his intense study of biology and the human form. da Vinci applied his biological studies to his artwork to create ulta realistic depictions of the human body. One example of this can be seen in da Vinci’s sketch titled Uterus with Foetus, which can be seen below.

Of the three periods, scientific knowledge expanded the most during the Baroque period. During this period, we saw the discoveries of the great Galileo Galilei and Sir Isaac Newton. One example in which the crossover between expanding scientific knowledge and art can be seen in the Baroque period is in the application of Sir Isaac Newton’s discovery of the parabola and architectural use of the concept. Newton’s discovery of calculus, and subsequently the parabola, influenced architects to create buildings using these principals, such as the Sistine Chapel, as seen
